Porsche excels at threading the line between luxury and sports. And so, we’re off to the Black Forest to find out if the new Panamera delivers the goods

The Porsche Panamera, now in its third generation, subtly reveals its advancements at first glance. The nuanced changes start at the front with new headlamps that seamlessly blend in with the more pronounced front fenders. The larger air intake openings, integrated into the new bumper and spoiler, add a more aggressive stance.

At the rear, the Panamera’s signature mono-brow light strip is now more pronounced, uniformly spanning the width of the car. Porsche also introduces optional centre-locking wheels for the first time, enhancing both style and functionality.

Inside, the evolution is more apparent. The interior exudes modern luxury, characterised by extensive use of piano black finishes. Despite the shift towards a more digital interface, Porsche has retained physical buttons for climate control, preserving a touch of the tactile experience. The high-gloss veneers, though stylish, can reflect sunlight during the peak afternoon hours.

The central 12.3-inch touchscreen panel controls most functions, including airflow direction. For added convenience and entertainment, an optional 10.9-inch touchscreen for the passenger allows video streaming, infotainment engagement, or performance monitoring.

A significant departure from tradition is the replacement of the analogue tachometer with a digital version on a 12.6-inch display, a change that purists might find bittersweet. Another modern element is the small gear toggle mounted between the driver and the central screen, replacing the conventional gear lever.

Embracing a minimalist approach, the new Porsche Active Ride air suspension employs a single-chamber setup instead of the previous three-chamber design. Porsche asserts that this new system, enhanced by integrated active damper technology, offers equal or superior performance. This innovation eliminates the need for anti-roll bars, with an electric hydraulic pump adjusting damper pressure to maintain stability and reduce body roll. As a result, the Panamera corners with remarkable flatness and fluency, even during aggressive driving.

The Panamera Turbo, the pinnacle of the range, combines supreme handling with an edge in comfort, positioning itself nearly in the luxury sedan category. Its ability to maintain a smooth ride over varied surfaces makes it an exceptional grand tourer, suitable for long-distance travel while still delivering an exhilarating driving experience.

This advanced suspension system isn’t entirely new but Porsche refines it further by using air suspension as the primary spring. This ensures a smoother ride over high-frequency road imperfections, enhancing overall comfort.

Our review model, the Turbo e-Hybrid, exemplifies Porsche’s commitment to hybrid technology as a bridge to future regulations banning pure internal combustion engines. This variant, subtly badged with the E-Hybrid moniker, boasts an impressive 680 PS system power, propelling the 2360 kg all-wheel-drive Panamera to 100 km/h in a mere 3.2 seconds.

The 4.0-litre V8 engine delivers 519 PS and a thrilling soundtrack, while the 190 PS electric motor contributes to the total 930 Nm of torque. This hybrid system also supports energy recuperation and can operate in full EV mode with a range of 92 km and a top speed of 140 km/h.

Testing the Panamera Turbo on the winding roads of the Black Forest showcased its superb ride quality and remarkable performance. The 680 PS engine ensures rapid acceleration, with the all-wheel-drive system efficiently transferring power to the road, even in damp conditions. The 8-speed PDK transmission optimises gear shifts with rapid precision, and the hybrid powertrain performs seamlessly at all speeds.

Cornering with such minimal body roll in a large sedan is a unique and almost surreal experience. Porsche ensures the Panamera retains its signature driving characteristics: poised, accurate, and engaging, delivering an immersive Porsche experience.

While the electric Taycan might seem like the future of Porsche, the Panamera Turbo e-Hybrid demonstrates that hybrid-combustion models still have a significant role to play, potentially extending the life of the internal combustion engine.
