To celebrate the 911’s 60th anniversary, Porsche has unveiled the 911 S/T, a special edition model conceived and developed with the purist in mind, with just 1,963 creations in the world
The annals of motoring history are filled with milestones aplenty. Few, however, are quite as significant as Porsche’s introduction of the 911 in 1963, which opened a new chapter for the marque. Six decades later, the 911 has firmly established itself as the most famous and recognisable model within Porsche’s line-up, in the process becoming an icon unto itself.
To celebrate the 911’s 60th anniversary, Porsche has unveiled the 911 S/T, a special edition model conceived and developed with the purist in mind. This new model has been built for sheer driving pleasure, with the single-minded pursuit of this elusive quality reflecting the 911’s raison d'etre as a high-performance enthusiasts’ sports car. Naturally, the 911 S/T’s focus is matched by its exclusiveness; just 1,963 examples of the model will be produced.

A Motoring and Cultural Icon
It’s difficult to overstate the 911’s impact on the automobile industry—and beyond. From a performance perspective, it is among the most successful race cars ever produced, with accolades including victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Porsche’s commitment to constantly innovate and improve the model has also created a line-up that consistently delivers an exhilarating drive. This, in turn, has made the 911 perennially popular, whether among hardcore petrolheads or casual enthusiasts. With some 1.2 million units produced in an uninterrupted run since 1963, the model has established itself as a cornerstone of the greater cultural zeitgeist. From its association with owners such as Steve McQueen and Keanu Reeves, to its status as a staple within video games and other forms of media in pop culture, the 911 has grown to become far more than a successful sports car.

A Fitting Tribute
The new 911 S/T has been optimised for performance on the road to make it an exceptional everyday drive. Porsche’s engineers started off with the naturally-aspirated, 386kW 4.0-litre boxer engine from the 911 GT3 RS, which they mated to a short-ratio manual transmission. To this combination, a running-gear setup optimised for agility and drivability was added, with a lightweight construction rounding out the overall package. The result? A powerful yet zippy sports car that completes the century sprint in just 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 300kph.
Sheer power aside, the 911 S/T also excites with its superb handling. Various components have been tweaked to achieve this, including the reduction of rotating mass in the engines, wheels, and brakes, as well as a newly developed lightweight clutch. The 911 S/T boasts a particularly snappy dynamic responsiveness, and reacts instantaneously to the tiniest inputs from the driver.

The 911 S/T is offered with an optional Heritage Design Package, which pays homage to Porsche’s heritage in various ways. The classic-design Porsche crest from the original 911, for instance, features prominently here, while the interior also sports cloth seat centres in Classic Cognac with black pinstripes. For aficionados seeking a more vintage aesthetic, this will be a must-have.

As the spiritual successor to that variant, 2023’s has proven to be more than a worthy follow-up. Beyond just a nod to the past, however, it also demonstrates Porsche’s unique expertise in developing and building sports cars, whether for the track or the road.
