When one speaks of Porsche, the 911 springs to mind. However, the Cayman models have come out of the shadows of its illustrious stablemate thanks to the use of the fabulous 4.0-litre flat six from the 911 range
The Porsche 911 is arguably Porsche’s most iconic model, and for the longest time, the brand has carefully nurtured its flagship into this premium position. However, with the prices of the 911 skyrocketing over the years, the need for an entry-level sports car opened up. Initially, this need was met by the open-top Boxster and later, the coupe version called the Cayman.
Entry-level models in the Cayman range start with a 2.0-litre flat four-cylinder engine, but should one be interested in something spicier, Porsche recently introduced the top-of-the-range 500PS Porsche Cayman GT4 RS 4.0. While it is certainly the most entertaining Cayman to date, some may find living with such an extreme sports car too daunting. Fear not, Porsche offers the perfect solution—the Cayman 4.0 GTS. This enchanting piece of engineering reviewed here seamlessly melds performance, sophistication, and panache.

Visual Delight
The moment you lay eyes on the Porsche Cayman 4.0 GTS, you’re drawn into its aesthetic allure. The sinuous lines, sculpted bodywork, and perfectly proportioned dimensions make the mid-engine Cayman 4.0 GTS nothing short of mesmerising. At the front, the sharp LED headlights peer out with an almost predatory gaze, while the flared wheel arches accentuate its sporting pedigree. The rear, adorned with the 3D Porsche badge and dual exhaust pipes, is a vision of elegance and performance in perfect harmony.
A unique palette of paint options offered by Porsche allows you to make your Cayman 4.0 GTS a true expression of your individuality. Whether you choose the classic Guards Red, the startling Python Green, or the head-turning Racing Yellow, each hue further enhances the car’s magnetism, making it impossible to pass by without a second glance.
A Sanctuary of Refinement
Step inside, and the opulence of the Porsche Cayman 4.0 GTS continues to captivate. The cockpit is a masterclass in ergonomic design, with sumptuous leather, Alcantara, and carbon fibre accents throughout. The sports seats, available in various finishes, provide optimal support and comfort during those spirited drives down winding roads.
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system is an exemplar of modern technology. It seamlessly integrates with your smartphone, offering an intuitive interface that ensures you remain connected while behind the wheel. Our car came with a standard Bose sound system, but there’s also an optional Burmester High-End Surround Sound System that transforms the cabin into a concert hall, making every journey an auditory delight.

Heart-Pounding Performance
To create a more user-friendly sports car while keeping the most enjoyable aspects of the extreme Cayman GT4 RS intact, Porsche tuned down the high-strung 500PS 4.0-litre flat-six engine to a more “sedate” 400PS. It’s a mechanical marvel that sings a symphony of power and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a satisfying 4.0 seconds. The engine’s soundtrack, while more muted, is a blend of whirring gears and the unique roar of the flat-six, producing a soundtrack that thrills the senses and still stirs the soul much like the 911.
The available seven-speed PDK transmission ensures swift, seamless gear changes, making the most of the engine’s performance. The mid-engine Cayman 4.0 GTS is incredibly poised and agile on the road, with precise steering and a wonderfully sorted suspension setup that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sportiness. It scythes through corners with a poise and agility that is quite simply, outstanding.

Unlike some of its high-strung mid-engine supercar counterparts, the two-seater Porsche Cayman 4.0 GTS offers a reasonable degree of practicality. The frunk (front trunk) is spacious enough to accommodate a weekend’s worth of luggage, so one can embark on a luxurious road trip without compromising on style or space.
Safety features are abundant, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring, ensuring you can enjoy your drive with peace of mind. It might be ubiquitous to all current Porsches but it bears repeating that the steering-mounted drive mode selector is simply genius.

A Symphony of Emotion
The Porsche Cayman 4.0 GTS is more than a car; it’s a conduit for emotion. It is not often that we come across a car in which every twist of the wheel, every push of the pedal, and every note from the engine is exhilarating. This remarkable machine is a brilliant combination of elegance and power, where comfort meets performance in perfect harmony. Thanks to the new tax structure, even the Cayman is beginning to escape the realm of affordability, but the Cayman 4.0 GTS is not just a car; it’s an experience—a symphony of elegance, emotion, and excellence. Its virtuoso performance has certainly left a lasting impression as it is close to being the ultimate embodiment of the gentleman’s sports car.
