Put away the smartphone. These high-quality fixed-lens cameras deliver great snaps, and make you look cool in the process
Sometimes a smartphone just won’t do—you need a camera that offers you better optics, better filters, and images with greater depth and richness. And you want a camera that not just looks beautiful, but also feels great in your hand.
With cameras, you are spoilt for choice. But the quality of fixed-lens point-and-shoots is so exceptional these days that we can afford to set aside our bulky DSLRs and even our L-Mount options. Plus, the size and weight of these fixed-lens shooters make them better travel companions. Here are our top five choices.

We’ve been fans of Ricoh’s highly identifiable and unique line of GR cameras since the GR1 was launched in 1996. The latest iteration, Ricoh GR IIIx, a minimalist, pocket-size stunner, boasts a 24.2 megapixel (MP) APS-C sensor and a fixed 40mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.8 lens. It’s the perfect focal length for capturing portraits, food and street scenes.

Above Sony RX100 VII
Our favourite Sony point-and-shoot is actually the discontinued RX1R II. That 42MP full-frame camera with a 35mm f/2 Zeiss lens was a masterpiece. The next best thing today is the even more compact Sony RX100 VII, which features a 20.1MP 1-inch sensor and a versatile 24-200mm f/2.8- 4.5 zoom lens. Its portability and extensive feature set make it a favourite among both vloggers and travel photographers.

When the latest model in Fujifilm’s X100 series was announced at the beginning of 2024, it quickly became the most pre-ordered camera in history. The hype around its predecessor X100V, aka TikTok’s favourite camera, fuelled the buzz, while the quality and specs of this latest iteration—a 40MP APS-C sensor and a fixed 23mm f/2 lens, and a whopping 20 film simulations—make it beloved among young street photographers, serious collectors and professionals alike.
