Mirror’s Jer Lau will have his second solo concert this winter. Here are 7 of his most celebrated songs that testify to his singing and music-making virtuosity.
There’s much excitement for the fans of Hong Kong boyband Mirror in Q4 this year, as one of its lead vocalists Jer Lau will have his second solo concert, Jer Lau The Shape of Breathing Live 2025, on November 30 and December 1, 2025 at AsiaWorld-Expo.
Lau has gone far from participating in school singing contests, busking and competing in ViuTV’s talent show Good Night Show – King Maker in 2018—which caught the attention of producer Florence Chan, who recruited him to be part of Mirror—to becoming one of the key voices and a prominent guitar and electric guitar player of the band. Two years ago, he had his first solo concert, and went on to win Best New Performer at multiple local music occasions, including the Metro Hit Awards, the Ultimate Song Chart Awards, the Chinese Gold Song Awards and the Chill Club 20/21 Awards.
Lau doesn’t stop at his creative career. In 2021, he branched out into acting and is most known for playing the lead role in the 2022 local comedy Mama’s Affair, for which he earned a Best New Actor nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

1. ‘Tale of Submerging’ (2020)

Part of Lau’s Tales Trilogy, a three-song project he launched in 2020, the song uses the imagery of drowning to portray the agony of heartbreak and cycles of self-punishment. Its protagonist deliberately sinks into darkness, symbolising despair and self-destruction, until an unexpected hand reaches out, offering redemption. Through dramatic shifts in melody and rhythm, the narrative moves from suffocation to rebirth, showing how love can transform pain into light and hope.
2. ‘Tale of Final Lucidity’ (2020)

This is Lau’s second song in Tales Trilogy and was later included in Mirror’s debut album One and All (2021). The song continues the narrative of darkness and rebirth from Tale of Submerging. It topped both the 903 Ultimate Song Chart and ViuTV’s Chill Club chart, reaching number 4 on Metro Radio’s charts.

3. ‘Moondweller’ (2024)

The song portrays a recluse who escapes Earth to live alone on the moon, seeking peace away from humanity. However, he faces an invasion by armed intruders as they fight for the lunar world for resources. Lau explains that the song’s musical arrangement mirrors this journey: it begins with only voice and electric guitar to evoke loneliness, gradually building into a dramatic, explosive climax of accelerating rhythms, layered instruments and an apocalyptic, black-hole atmosphere.
4. ‘Madman’s Diary’ (2021)

This song blends forceful beats, dense drumming and electronic elements in a style distinct from his earlier Tales Trilogy. It narrates from the perspective of a “madman”, lost in desire and indulgence before experiencing sudden enlightenment. Yet the cycle repeats, reflecting both Russian novelist Nikolai Gogol’s and Chinese writer Lu Xun’s portrayals of madness. It also references The Beatles’ 1967 song, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. Demanding a wide vocal range and intensity, the track is hailed as one of Lau’s defining works.
5. ‘Stellar Moments of Humankind’ (2021)

Inspired by Austrian writer Stefan Zweig’s 1927 history book, Stellar Moments of Humankind, the song encourages listeners to face their own shining moments with courage. The message culminates in self-acceptance and learning to love oneself. Its release even boosted Zweig’s book borrowing rates in Hong Kong libraries.

6. ‘That’s Not What You Want’ (2025)

The song is a heartfelt solo co-written by Lau and singer Wilson Ng Lam Fung, inspired by Lau’s journey from a street performer to a Hong Kong star. It encourages listeners to avoid compromising themselves into becoming, in his words, “cogs in a machine”. Drawing from his struggles balancing passion and responsibility, he turned music into a message of resilience. The track reassures fans facing uncertainty, urging them to pursue happiness and authenticity with courage and persistence.
7. ‘Childhood Nostalgia’ (2025)

Lau imagines himself as a genie who brings back childhood happiness and memories to a woman who feels lost about her work life. He was inspired by his own experience and once said in an interview with a local media that being an adult means facing a lot of pressure from work and family. “I hope this song can remind everyone that it isn’t a bad thing to maintain that childhood innocence, and that you must keep being curious about the world and exploring unknown paths,” he said.
