Courtroom thriller ‘The Sparring Partner’ leads with 16 nominations at the 41st awards

The Hong Kong Film Awards is set to return on April 16 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre to honour the best locally produced films of 2022. The Hong Kong Film Awards Association announced its nominations across 19 categories today (February 9) at a press conference.

Leading the field is The Sparring Partner, a crime thriller by new director Ho Cheuk-Tin, which was shortlisted across 16 categories, from best film to screenplay, while Ho has also been nominated as best new director. Louis Koo, Sean Lau and Carina Lau’s big-ticket sci-fi movie Warriors of Future picked up 11 nominations, largely in technical categories such as best cinematography and action choreography.

In the acting department, established thespians including Anthony Wong, for The Sunny Side of the Street, Louis Cheung, for The Narrow Road, and Louisa So, for The Sparring Partner, have made it onto the list, while Canto-pop boy band Mirror’s member Edan Lui has received two nominations for best new performer, thanks to his turn in Hong Kong Family and Chilli Laugh Story.
