If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to throw a Bling Empire-worthy party, ponder no more—its Singaporean star Kane Lim spills the tea.

Kane Lim is known for many things. He’s one of the main—and most entertaining—cast members on Netflix’s hit reality TV show, Bling Empire; He’s an heir to a Singaporean family that is worth billions; and he’s one of the newest ambassadors for Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty.

But one thing that’s not talked about enough is the fabulous parties he regularly throws for his friends throughout the series, which are, more often than not, loaded with diamonds, truffles and drama.

“Ambience and creating the right vibe is so important," says Lim. "This includes everything from location, music and timing….I personally prefer dinner because everyone looks better in the dark.”

Tatler caught up with the star to talk about what makes a good host, and how parties have the power to bring people together and support budding businesses.

In Good Company

When it comes to hosting a party, the most important thing to consider, according to Lim, is the company. “My first rule is to have a diverse group [of guests],” he says matter-of-factly. “Not just people who have similar interests. It’s good to have people with differences, and who come from different backgrounds.”

Take, for example, a party Lim hosted in Season Three, which was attended by an eclectic crowd that included Grey’s Anatomy star Alex Landi, Grammy-nominated rapper Jeezy with his wife, TV host Jeannie Mai, and actor Lewis Tan – who caused a bit of a stir when he showed up to the party arm-in-arm with Bling Empire star, Kim Lee.

The party was hosted at upscale Los Angeles restaurant Crustacean, which Lim transformed into a museum-like exhibition space showcasing jewellery pieces by designer and entrepreneur, Jonathan Koon. “There were diamond encrusted hats and very cool, avant-garde bracelets… jewellery that’s really catered toward men,” Lim recalls.

Ever the aspiring businessman, Koon and Lim recently teamed up to create a streetwear brand called B.L.I.N.G., an acronym for ‘because life is never guaranteed’. To launch its debut collection, the pair hosted a party for 650 guests at upscale retailer Fred Segal’s West Hollywood flagship.

“Every piece that was bought tied into charities that my business partner and I support,” says Lim. One such charity was Golden Voice Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to education and giving back to the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) community, founded by Bling Empire co-star Kelly Mi Li.

Close to the Heart

Lim says parties are a great opportunity to highlight the things he likes or cares about – be it a charity event to support a cause that’s close to his heart, or a way to bring exposure to a brand or business.

“Even through catering, where we can help [bring exposure to] something like a plant-based restaurant,” says Lim, who is a practicing Buddhist and vegetarian. “I try to do my part in saving the planet by serving vegetarian food at my parties.”

Case in point: in season two, Lim threw a lavish dinner party to celebrate his collaboration with Korean eyewear brand, Gentle Monster. To cater the affair, Lim tapped contemporary Cantonese restaurant, Ricebox. Though not exclusively plant-based in their day-to-day operations, Ricebox ran with the theme “vegan dim sum and truffles” for the evening’s menu – with waiters walking around the table, liberally shaving black truffle over delicate plant-based dumplings.

The Bling Empire cast and crew loved it so much, that they have made Ricebox a go-to for special events. At the show’s season two premiere party, husband and wife owners Leo and Lydia Lee, went all out to create a special menu that featured one "bling" dish to represent each of the 12 main cast members: think caviar siu mai, gold leaf har gow and vegan crab cakes to name a few.

And in season three, Lim approached the Los Angeles eatery once again to organise in-flight snacks for the crew when they flew to San Francisco—on a private jet, of course—to celebrate co-star Mimi Morris’ birthday.

Sharing is Caring

Introducing the aforementioned Gentle Monster party in his on-screen confessional, Lim said: “I have some great stuff going on in my life, and I feel every achievement in life shouldn’t be celebrated alone, it should be celebrated with good friends.”

With his real family based in Singapore, Lim has made his tight-knit group of friends in Los Angeles a kind of family away from home—evident in his brother-sister bond with Kelly Mi Li, or his at-times tempestuous but undeniably close friendship with Kevin Kreider.

“The most rewarding part of hosting parties for my friends, is creating a good time for everyone to come together,” says the reality TV star. “Especially being somewhere like LA that’s so big, it’s important to make time to see each other and enjoy each other’s company.”

When asked what he believes makes for a great party, Lim says it’s about “creating an experience for guests” and one way he does this is by tapping into his Singaporean heritage.

In season one, a homesick Lim decided to throw a Singapore National Day party to show his friends in LA “what Singapore means” to him. He served boba tea, kaya butter toast with eggs and steamed paus—vegetarian of course—to his friends at Formosa Café,  an iconic retro-chic Chinese restaurant founded in 1925, which has been visited by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, James Dean and Elvis Presley.

He says, “The most rewarding part of hosting is that my friends enjoy themselves."
