BTS has done it again! The septet has made history as the first-ever Asian act to win the coveted Artist of the Year award at the AMAs

For BTS, making history seems like second nature—so much so that have (unsurprisingly) done it again. The septet from South Korea made history as the first Korean and Asian act to bring home the coveted Artist of the Year award at the American Music Awards, one of the major music award shows in the US—in their first year of finally being nominated.

In addition to winning Artist of the Year, BTS also brought home the Favourite Duo or Group (Pop) award for the third year in a row. Their chart-topping and award-winning song, Butter—which broke five world records across YouTube—also took home the Favourite Pop Song award.

RM, leader of the group said when they accepted the award, “Nobody could have ever bet on the odds of us standing here receiving this award except ARMY (the name of their fans). Seven boys from Korea united by a love for music...This whole thing is a miracle.”

Rapper Suga proudly delivered his thanks in Korean saying, “Four years ago, when we had our US debut performance at the AMAs, we didn’t really know we could come to receive the Artist of the Year Award like this. I believe that it’s all thanks to you ARMY. Thank you ARMY.”

Main vocalist Jungkook added, “This is the beginning of a new chapter.”

BTS’ appearance at the AMAs marks the first time they’ve accepted an award in person overseas since the pandemic. Previously, the group was in New York to give a speech at the United Nations General Assembly as Special Presidential Envoys for Culture and Future Generations. They also gave a historic performance of Permission to Dance at the UN headquarters which was watched by millions online.

BTS performed My Universe with Coldplay for the first time at the awards and gave a smooth performance of Butter. The group is in the United States for their first live concert in two years called, BTS Permission to Dance on Stage.

BTS made their US television debut when they performed DNA at the 2017 American Music Awards. And today, they bring home the Artist of the Year award. It’s history in the making.
