Hong Kong’s storied walk-up tenement buildings, or tong lau (“Chinese building”) are fast disappearing, so these painstakingly renovated homes are not easy to come by on the market today
In a city that urbanises at breakneck pace, it is perhaps inevitable that many of Hong Kong’s tong lau—constructed from the 1800s through to the late 20th century—would fall into despair or face demolition. That’s what makes these properties on the market really special: located inside old tenement buildings, they have each been transformed into luxury homes in different ways.

1. A Townhouse Converted From A Walk-Up
51 Tung Street started life in 1973 as a five-storey walk-up and has since been converted into a luxurious three-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse. It is currently on the market for HK$72 million.
Taking up 1,797 sq ft, the house is decorated in a contemporary style of interiors. Natural wood finishings create a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Note that the ground floor of the building is not included in the sale, although the outdoor spaces available in the home more than make up for it: take your pick of multiple balconies and a rooftop that comes complete with a jacuzzi.
Tung Street is part of the stylish enclave nicknamed PoHo on the fringe of Sheung Wan, within walking distance from Central.
Listing price: HK$72 million
