After the successful debut of The Estate in Kuala Lumpur, the CEO of BON Estates Chan Jin-Wy explains what the boutique developer is about and offers a sneak peek into what it's doing next

BON Estates was initially founded in 2012 in Penang and engaged in developing a handful of landed property projects. In 2015, BON Estates’ founder, Goh Soo Sing, rebranded the company and expanded the business to explore opportunities in Kuala Lumpur.

This led to the development of The Estate in South Bangsar, designed to capture the philosophy of BON Estates. CEO Chan Jin-Wy shares more about the boutique developer and its future plans.

What's the story behind the name and what is the BON Estates philosophy?

The word Bön itself is inspired by ancient Tibetan teachings on the pursuit of balance through the harmony of the five natural elements of Earth, Wood, Water, Metal and Fire.

Similarly, our building philosophy is about crafting a well-balanced living experience that is in harmony with our surrounding environment.

What sets a BON Estates development apart?

We are sensitive to the changing urban landscape and intuitive about the changing priorities of modern urban dwellers. We also understand that consumers today are more educated, enlightened and well-travelled, and they have become more discerning about not just the quality and design of living spaces but also the quality of life being offered.

At BON Estates, we embrace this evolution of demand, believing that everyone deserves to live better. As such, we adopt an outlook of constantly pushing benchmarks through exceptional design and innovative lifestyle solutions. Still, we are equally dedicated to preserving a sense of comfort, sanctuary and security, as well as a vital sense of belonging that timelessly defines a home.

The Estate was BON Estates' first development. What are its key features?

The Estate proved to be a very successful project, partly because the concept resonated with buyers. They also responded well to the dedication and determination of our team to share the unique lifestyle proposition on offer. From the start, we identified market demand for larger family-sized units in the Bangsar South vicinity. We added the lure of greenery, wholesome surroundings, resort-style leisure facilities in a calm ambience and the appeal of quiet sophistication within well-designed luxury homes.

This struck a chord with urban families seeking a serene escape from the pace of city life without compromising the convenience of urban connectivity. Our dual-key units also appealed to those seeking multi-generational living solutions. At the same time, those looking for multi-functional spaces were also attracted to the extra space we offered.

Overall, 98 per cent of sales have been achieved for The Estate, despite Covid-related economic and social disruptions.

What was the overreaching concept for architectural and space planning, and how does it enhance life here?

The lead principal architect for The Estate is Ar. JS Lim is an experienced and well-respected Malaysian architect that captured our desire to balance a modern look with quiet sophistication and timeless charm. Our green and engagingly lush outdoor spaces were curated by renowned landscape architectural firm Seksan Design, while our warm and welcoming interior spaces were expertly designed by Karen Mok Design.

We consider all three to be masters in their crafts, and they were able to enhance the story of The Estate with their unique individual styles, culminating in unity to create the project’s overall look and feel. The result is a luxurious resort-inspired setting, made distinct by the artful use of natural materials and the enchanting influence of natural greenery.

Tell us more about Bon Kiara.

It's aptly named because of its sought-after location in the popular Mont Kiara locale. Our latest project will take shape on 4.15 acres of land and offer a new benchmark for exceptional living experiences in the vicinity.

Embracing Mont Kiara’s cosmopolitan appeal while infusing our building philosophy of delivering a balanced quality of life, the upcoming development will build on the previous success of The Estate and expand on the appeal of quality urban living. Bon Kiara also learns from the pandemic experience and continues to address the persistent demand for spacious high-rise homes in vibrant urban centres. We also address homebuyers seeking extra space for multi-purpose usage as buyers continue redefining their homes to fit post-pandemic purposes.

You can expect Bon Kiara to be distinct with its development concept, design language, lifestyle offerings and facilities. It also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. As a GreenRe Gold Certified building, buyers can expect energy and water efficiency, natural light and ventilation, a meticulous selection of durable materials, and lush green surroundings. Bon Kiara is the first project in Mont Kiara area to provide individual EV charging isolator for every unit, and will also provide a shuttle service to surrounding Mont Kiara for residents

Satisfying the growing demand for green outdoor spaces, the project will feature a central park to host regular activities and family picnics. Located beside the park is a clubhouse for residents, hosting several facilities.

Additionally, Bon Kiara will inspire a carefree lifestyle with a comfortable and open Mediterranean-inspired resort setting, complemented by the freedom to choose from various lifestyle experiences hosted within the urban ecosystem of the exciting Mont Kiara locale.

Why did BON Estates decide to build in Mont Kiara?

Mont Kiara is a mature and popular neighbourhood with a substantial population size. Usually, neighbourhoods with a large population represent several advantages, including commercial and logistic conveniences—an MRT station has been proposed close to the site—and a strong potential for value appreciation and sustainable demand. This adds to its appeal in terms of subsale and ease of tenancy.

In addition, our unit sizes range between 2,000 sq ft and 3,000 sq ft, which suit long-term family occupiers instead of short-term investors, ensuring natural progression for both the growth of value and the development of a genuine living community.

As most large units in Mont Kiara are now almost a decade old and are limited in supply, Bon Kiara provides an updated home with a fresh take on modern urban lifestyle.
