Fur-parenting is a fun, rewarding, and exciting experience, and while raising a younger pet can be especially tedious and daunting, at the end of it all, you will have made a friend for life

For pet lovers, there are few things in life more precious and irresistible than a puppy or kitten. They’re tiny, adorable, and a bundle of fluff—who wouldn’t want one? But taking care of a younger pet is no small task. From decorating their space to choosing tailored nutrition, here are seven things you need to know about raising your fur babies:

1. Creating a safe, pet-friendly home will help your pet adapt more quickly

When you bring home a new pet, the last thing you want is for them to feel unsafe. You want your kitten or puppy to explore the space around them with confidence and comfort, which means giving them a dedicated area and providing them with all the necessary equipment, which includes a place to sleep, toys, and two bowls: one for food and the other for water. It’s better to use stainless steel bowls over plastic bowls as they are more durable and hygienic. (Some pets might also be allergic to plastic!) Other tools to prepare in advance include a litter tray and scratching post for your kitten and a collar or harness, a leash, and a brush for your pup.

2. Meeting the family will take time

Gaining a new pet’s trust might take a while, but before you know it, they’ll be well-loved by the entire family. When you have young children at home, you have an additional responsibility to make sure they know to carefully approach and safely pick up their new four-legged friend, as sudden movement and rough handling can be frightening to young pets.

If you have other pets, remember the golden rule: the current residents are masters of the house. Don’t show a preference for your newly arrived pet as your other pets could feel abandoned. Provide each pet with their own areas and belongings, introduce them gradually, always keep a watchful eye, and soon enough they’ll learn to live happily together.

3. A visit to the vet in the first few days is vital

Schedule your pet's first trip to the vet within a few days of their arrival to make sure they are healthy and have no underlying conditions. Treat this as an opportunity for you to ask questions, to find out about vaccinations, and to know other means of preventive care. It is strongly recommended that you take them to the vet regularly for basic care, weight monitoring, vaccination coverage, and an adapted worming program.

Royal Canin is currently offering free veterinary checkup vouchers when you register to their mobile application, The Royal Canin Club. Have access to two free in-person clinic consultations, and if you are unable to visit a partner clinic, teleconsultations are available to those pet owners. There's no reason to miss out on a checkup!

4. Food is best tailored-fit for your pet

Health can appear different for each pet. Choosing a tailored health-nutrition diet means it is adapted to your pet’s age, size, breed, and sensitivity, and has a blend of natural antioxidants, vitamins, and amino-acids. It will also promote your pet’s natural defences, ensuring they are infrequently ill. Some more visible effects of a healthy diet on your pet include vitality, a healthy appetite, well-formed stools and no digestive disorders, harmonious body development, and a glossy coat.

Health nutrition diets like that of created by Royal Canin are prepared with great care and with the same health and safety rules as imposed on human food preparation, thus meeting the highest standards of quality and food safety. A wide product range ensures that there’s a formula crafted for your pet’s precise needs.

Royal Canin’s products also come in different textures (dry and wet), which can both be fed during the growth phase when it’s best to offer your pet different textures, as this will help them accept varieties of food during adulthood.

5. Growing pups and kittens require a lot of sleep

It is during sleep that your pet's body strengthens their immune systems and produces essential hormones that stimulate growth. Try not to wake or disturb them during these vital moments of rest. Eventually, kittens will choose their favourite spots to sleep or hide, so prepare comfortable bedding in different cosy corners around the house, and make sure to include a few beds up high, too, where they’ll feel the safest.

When choosing bedding for puppies, ensure it is comfortable and adapted to your pup’s future adult size. Ideally, keep their bed outside your bedroom, but in a calm spot away from windows and doors so that they don’t feel that they must stay on guard.

6. Playing is essential to well-being!

Your little bundles of joy will be curious, excellent learners, and will love to play. Toys, games, and training are vital to their mental stimulation and to strengthening your bond with them. Both kittens and pups can be trained; dogs are very receptive to commands, and while cats may widely be considered “untrainable” they are actually perfectly capable of learning particular behaviors. Just be patient, use clear and consistent signals when communicating, and give constant positive reinforcement.

7. Prioritizing your pet’s hygiene can prevent future health problems

Establishing practices like regular tooth-brushing, bathing, and ear-cleaning from a young age will greatly help you maintain their health and grooming well into adulthood. Proper hygiene can also help them avoid injury and infection. Similar to nutrition, the appropriate practices and supplies can differ for each pet, so don’t hesitate to ask your vet or professional groomer for advice!
