IDesignerLab creates a refined sanctuary that beautifully weaves together Japandi minimalism with modern Balinese elements
Located on Prince Charles Crescent, this abode in the Crest condominium already had much potential, from the double-volume living room to its sizeable 2,000 sq ft footprint. Originally designed for a family with young children, the loft apartment had its fair share of wear and tear over the years. It needed to be redone by IDesignerLab to be fully tailored to the needs of the new owners, a couple who now live in the home with their pet dog.
Carlos Sim and Kathy Kao of IDesignerLab were tasked to give the apartment a complete makeover, blending elements of the Japandi and Balinese design styles that the couple favour. The ultimate goal was to create an abode that “embraces simplicity, warmth and a connection to nature”.

For this project, the designers aimed to celebrate the tactility of natural materials while balancing an interplay between rigidity and softness. “This is a home that doesn’t shout. It simply breathes,” says Sim, founder of IDesignerLab. “Our vision was centred on incorporating natural textures, organic materials and a calm, open atmosphere while ensuring the space feels timeless, functional and deeply personal to the owners.”
A soft, neutral palette comprising off-white, beige and earthy tones is juxtaposed with black trimmings on the decorative elements, such as an oversized mirror that adds a touch of drama to the dining room. Throughout the apartment, technology also plays an important role in creating a seamless look. Smart lighting ensures that the home feels both bright and cosy while being carefully incorporated into the interior scheme.

The design studio undertook a complete refurbishment of the abode, leaving just the original aluminium windows and the marble flooring intact. In particular, the four-bedroom apartment was reconfigured into a three-bedroom unit to make room for a spacious walk-in wardrobe located in the master suite.
The mezzanine above the dining room was removed, unveiling a dramatic double-volume ceiling and making the open-plan dining area the centrepiece of the home. To accentuate the look of this voluminous space, a full-height expanse of white brickwork was painstakingly installed on the wall by a skilled bricklayer.

The island cabinetry is another noteworthy feature: stucco-effect paint was applied directly onto it, requiring a close collaboration with experienced craftsmen to perfect the raw texture that complements the abode’s overall aesthetic.
In addition, an olive tree presents a human scale to the lofty 6m-high ceiling of this space. The double-volume zone soaks in the abundance of daylight while casting a beautiful play of shadows throughout the day. Put together, these elements create an atmosphere that is reminiscent of an indoor courtyard, creating a relaxing environment in the dining room.

Eschewing over-ornamentation in favour of a refined blend of textures and proportions, the overall interior design concept has a soothing effect. The home tastefully embodies minimalist restraint and maintains a reverence for nature.
“The most enjoyable aspect of this project was witnessing the transformation unfold on site, turning 3D visuals and technical drawings into tangible, lived-in spaces,” recalls Sim, reflecting on the design journey. “Moments like the photoshoot [for the home] also allowed us to appreciate the crafted details and take pride in creating a timeless sanctuary tailored just for the owners.”
