Inspired by the luxurious yet laid-back appeal of modern boat houses and beach residences, Sujonohun transformed these elegant show units near Singapore’s East Coast Park into rich and tactile oceanfront homes

Open and intimately connected to their surroundings—that’s how Sujono Lim, Molina Hun and Yanika Gunawan define modern coastal residences. The creative minds behind Sujonohun’s latest undertaking, a series of show units at the prestigious Meyer Blue development by UOL Group Limited and Singapore Land, the designers drew inspiration from boat houses and beach living for the units’ sophisticated interiors, being particularly enamoured with the tactile nature of coastal spaces.

Layered living

This coastal inspiration manifests primarily through the material choices and curated textured finishes that are employed throughout the two- and three-bedroom units. A key highlight is a three-dimensional feature in the two-bedroom apartment, which functions as a solid yet airy separator between the living room and its surrounding spaces.

As the designers reveal, this feature was carefully crafted to showcase “the intricacy of wood craftsmanship while maintaining a sense of lightness and air”, with mirrored panels subtly integrated into the design. These panels were intended to enhance spatial depth while gently suggesting the movement of light over water; they “introduce layered reflections, evoking the glistening surface of the sea”, and amplify the connection between the interiors and the coastal setting.

Subtle materiality

Every element in these units was meticulously considered, with special attention paid to the interplay of materiality and lighting. From custom furniture pieces and subtle wall treatments to ambient lighting, each design decision was made to affect not only the visual appeal but also the tactile and atmospheric quality of the space. The team placed particular focus on how different responses to texture and light create a seamless spatial experience that feels both natural and immersive.

Beyond the designers’ own vision, the collaborative process with the developer’s marketing and product teams also played an important role in shaping the final outcome. Sujonohun emphasised consistent two-way communication to ensure that the design intent aligned perfectly with the client’s aspirations. Even the tight timeline, although challenging,  was  smoothly managed.

As for the most enjoyable part? “The opportunity to exercise full creative authorship,” they state happily. The designers were afforded a “cohesive expression of the design intent”, extending from the spatial composition to the curation of the furniture and other styling elements—a level of trust and creative freedom they describe as “deeply rewarding”.
