The homeowners, a family seeking a warm and inviting atmosphere for their full-time residence, envisioned a classical house reflecting the rich history of modern Indian residences during the pre-independence colonial era.

“The excitement lay in studying the older bungalows and how they featured distinct European style while still being climate-responsive, as services like air conditioning were unavailable back then,” recall Amit Aurora and Rahul Bansal, principal architect partners of Delhi-based groupDCA.

“While this exploration allowed us to bring back the charm of that architectural style, we believe that simply imitating an architectural style is insufficient,” they add. “Instead, we aim to blend traditional planning principles with the tropical climate of India, reimagining them to suit contemporary needs.”

Inspiration for the House of Verandahs stemmed from colonial heritage, specifically bungalows in regions colonised by the British during the pre-independence era. These homes, alongside those across the colonial belt—from Thailand, Africa, and the Caribbean—effectively regulated their microclimates while embodying a classical aesthetic.
“They informed our design choices and enriched the design dialogue, one that seamlessly merges the elegance of European styles with modern functionality, honouring tradition while addressing today’s living demands,” Aurora and Bansal share.

Spanning 8,000 sq ft, House of Verandahs is divided into two primary zones, the eastern wing houses the living and dining areas, a well-equipped kitchen, and utility spaces, whereas the western zone features private quarters and circulation spaces, including six spacious bedrooms and dressing areas.
Through the vaulted east-facing entrance, the double-height central living room’s indented profile leads into the outdoor garden within the building’s footprint, where an independent gym structure with subterranean servant quarters is located, alongside an alfresco dining area for outdoor party requirements.
