Prestige Global Designs crafts a welcoming home in Singapore that has a cosy and carefree resort atmosphere

The sun, sandy stretches, blue skies, and the sound and sights of the sea— these elements comprise the perfect ingredients for a relaxing setting for a beach getaway. To have cadences of these in a home would certainly add to its soothing environment. For one multigenerational family living together in Singapore, their resort-inspired abode evokes these details and more, as expertly crafted by Michael Ong and Jeremy Tay of Prestige Global Designs.

The residence is a 4,500 sq ft property located within a landed cluster-house development in Singapore’s exclusive and lush Bukit Timah neighbourhood. The family of five got to know the work of the homegrown design firm through positive word of mouth, and were impressed enough by their portfolio to enlist the studio to craft a cosy, warm and timeless interior for them.

While the spacious property already had many positive qualities, the designers did feel that some rooms could be improved, with ample storage incorporated throughout the house. Areas of improvement include the kitchen, which was opened up to become more welcoming. The Singaporean owners also wanted to have a musical zone centred around the piano, and an entertainment room where they could watch a movie or appreciate their favourite tunes. As the floor plan was already quite ideal, the family wanted to minimise changes to the spatial layout.

“The design theme is modern resort—we drew inspiration from the home’s luscious green surroundings. We wanted to create an interior that is soothing yet elegant, with a touch of character,” says Tay. The firm employed primarily warm earthy tones, with pops of colour on accent pieces such as the dining chairs. House plants also help to bring elements of nature indoors, adding to the relaxed, resort-inspired atmosphere.

With texture being one of the big buzzwords in interior design, the designers felt it was important to create a layered look that blends trending materials such as cane furnishings and bouclé fabrics, which brings more tactility to the home. “This emphasis on the tactile—as opposed to sleek and smooth surfaces—continues with the latest decorative details that are flooding our social media feeds,” declares Tay.

Fluted details are also among the textured elements that the designers incorporated in the home to add to its cosily layered feel. These ribbed or grooved textures can be seen on accent furniture, accessories and lighting as well as cabinet doors and wall panels.

“Fluted designs date back to ancient Greece and Rome, where vertical grooves distinguished many of the columns now emblematic of classical architecture,” explains Tay. “Their popularity today coincides with a resurgence in neoclassical design, which draws inspiration from these early architectural styles, as well as the art deco style that developed in the 1920s. Both of these aesthetics encompass geometric forms, and fluted accents have become a favourite way to incorporate those motifs into modern spaces.”

The open-plan living room makes a graceful first impression by showcasing furnishings in neutral hues, set against fluted timber walls. These include a sofa from Olta and a coffee table from CYC with pleated details, appearing like the fluttering pages of a new book. The art-loving family were quite specific with the curation of paintings in the home, and this is evident in the living area as well. A blue abstract work is placed above the piano, its soft swirls forming a pleasing contrast to the linear fluted details.

This cosy living area segues to a vibrant dining zone, where leather chairs from Compar in eye-catching shades of yellow, green and pink make a punchy, colourful statement. Above it is a set of sleek suspension lights from Lodes featuring forms reminiscent of conductor’s batons, subtly channelling the musical theme and the proximity of the piano in this space.

In the adjacent kitchen, globular suspension lights from Penta play up the neutral-hued culinary space. “We love the kitchen. To continue the language of simplicity, we created a no-fuss modern kitchen with a glossy finish and beautifully veined countertops, that looks out to a plant-filled backyard. It’s very relaxing and enjoyable,” says Tay.

The bedrooms upstairs convey feelings of comfort and tranquillity with their light and simple colour schemes. The daughters’ and grandmother’s bedrooms are located on the second floor, while the parents’ master suite takes up the third floor. A blue artwork by acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami adds a dose of fun to the daughter’s bedrooms, which are furnished with pieces from CB2. In the master bedroom, a calming artwork with wave-like details imbues the space with a sense of serenity, complementing the elegant pieces selected for this room. These include the custom fluted headboard and a pair of table lamps from Poltrona Frau.

Ensconced in the basement is the music room, which provides both an intimate and optimal listening and movie-viewing experience, benefiting from the acoustics of the subterranean level. In the foyer of the basement, a large-format artwork greets guests, its dynamic strokes and bright hues infusing the space with energy and life. A foliage-patterned wallpaper is a lively focal point in the entertainment den.

Completed swiftly in three months, the tasteful outcome was met with much joy by the family and their guests. The designers delighted in getting to know the family members during the home renovation process, while crafting a calming and cohesively designed space that all the inhabitants can enjoy and grow to love. “They are very happy with the overall look. They feel the space is relaxing and comfortable, and their guests are also very impressed,” shares Tay. These are gratifying words indeed, for the designers to hear from their client.
