The work of Prestige Global Designs, this terrace house in Singapore provides ample room for all the little things that make for a happy family life

Building an ideal home is about weaving together the paradoxes of work and home,” declares Jeremy Tay, director of Prestige Global Designs. For a family of six for whom telecommuting has become part of the norm, their home is a place for work and play, and a space where they can create fond memories of time spent together.

The clients live in a 4,500 sq ft terrace house in northern Singapore, in close proximity to a park connector. The owners needed two home offices—a study for their four children and a conducive workspace shared by the husband and wife. When the couple came across the homegrown firm’s work in an issue of Tatler Homes Singapore, they were won over by their creativity and promptly enlisted the studio for the renovation of their abode.

While the existing interior was in good shape, there was room for improvement. The kitchen, as well as the wardrobe and bathroom in the master suite, were dimly lit spaces that needed to be redesigned. The family wanted a brighter and more spacious-looking interior that incorporated cabinetry to store the family’s memorabilia and cherished objects.

Prestige Global Designs replaced all of the existing flooring and windows as part of the interior makeover. A neutral scheme was also selected to enhance the sense of space in the home. “We hope to transport the clients to a haven of calm whenever they return home after a hectic day outdoors or at work,” says Tay.

With the intention of creating an interior that conveys “contemporary luxury, comfort and timelessness”, the firm selected some of the finest materials available, which include parquet wood flooring and marble feature walls. Metal finishes in warm hues were selected to impart a sense of luxury and add a contemporary touch. “We are seeing more interiors embracing warm metal finishes such as bronze, copper, brass, gold and rose gold. These finishes are luxurious and modern, and breathe life into neutral schemes,” comments Tay.

The impressive foyer sets the tone for the home with its use of dark wood and glass. Adds Tay: “As the adage goes, first impressions count. The entryway is the key to setting the scene and defining a home. It is where the clients welcome their guests, so it provides a glimpse into their personality and lifestyle. This is also the place for goodbye kisses and welcome-back hugs—a place of family rituals.”

A timber screen separates the foyer from the entertaining areas, while allowing natural light to enter the space. Here, an inviting armchair and a Flos floor lamp provide a comfortable spot for the family or a guest to rest and put on their shoes. To the right of the entryway is the children’s study, where tuition classes can be conducted. An L-shaped desk was built so the kids could make a habit of doing their homework together.

To the left of the foyer is the open-plan living and dining room, where the use of light wood wall panels ties the look together. Black metal strips add a graphic edge to the neutral scheme of the space, and are enhanced by a mirrored wall in a rose-gold finish. The elegant designer furnishings represent the clients’ appreciation for the finer things in life; these include various pieces from Italian brand Minotti designed by Rodolfo Dordoni. A round rug references the curvy coffee tables, while the curtains and Crate & Barrel decorative cushions are among the other soft touches here.

A wall that used to separate the dining area and kitchen was removed to improve the spatial flow; this allows parties to spill over from the kitchen to the open-plan areas. The island is where the family and their friends would gather around for drinks; it features a dark marble slab that’s also applied to the feature walls in the living and dining areas.

While the ground floor sets the stage for glamorous gatherings, the levels above it are designed as tranquil zones customised for each inhabitant. “We wanted every member of the family to be able to relax in their own private space, while creating plenty of common areas where everyone can bond,” says Tay.

The master suite and home office are located on the second storey for the couple’s convenience. Various lighting options help set the mood in the workspace for different occasions—bright during office hours, and a warm glow for cocktail hour. The Le Majestueux horse sculpture from Daum on the desk signifies speed and bravery, qualities that the family admires. An earthy scheme reigns in the master bedroom, where a pair of table lamps on the Minotti Milton nightstands brings symmetry to the space.

In contrast, the daughters’ room conveys a dreamier theme with its pink and warm terracotta hues; Tay refers to the room as being inspired by a “cabin in the woods”, in reference to its angular proportions. “It reminds one of the experience of gazing upwards at the stars in the woods,” adds Tay, who considers it his favourite space in the house.

Taking a total of six months to complete, the renovation was met with delight by the family. The living area is where the occupants hold movie marathons, and the kitchen is a cosy space for breakfast with the kids. Even the study has become an inviting zone that the children enjoy using; a testament to the firm’s adroit hand at crafting a haven that the entire family is now proud to call home.
