Cover Sisters Eunice and Julie Yeo share a moment of laughter, recreating their late grandmother’s Peranakan recipes in Eunice’s V-ZUG kitchen

In this maritime-inspired home designed by Architology Interiors, sisters Eunice and Julie Yeo reconnect over Peranakan recipes and discover how V-ZUG elevates the rituals they learned from their grandmother

In many families, recipes are often passed down the age-old way—carefully handwritten notes covering the flour-covered pages of recipe books. But for homeowner Eunice Yeo, her late grandmother’s Peranakan dishes were preserved differently: by memory, intuition and the quiet confidence of “agak-agak” (estimation).  It is this deeply human, instinctive approach to cooking that she and her sister Julie have begun reclaiming in Eunice’s newly completed home, a maritime-inspired sanctuary designed by Terrence Quah, co-founder of Architology Interiors.

Cooking has always been the sisters’ language of love. Even after both got married and settled into homes of their own, they continued to visit one another simply to cook, exchange recipes, and catch up. “It was how we stayed close,” Eunice reflects. Their grandmother, a skilled Peranakan cook, never relied on recipes—everything was done by taste and feel. Recreating her dishes, Eunice shares, has become a way of honouring her memory while strengthening their own bond.

Among Eunice’s fondest memories was the ritual of preparing Nonya chang (glutinous rice dumplings) together as children. The sisters were tasked with separating glutinous rice grains—white in one pile, translucent in another—an exercise they found strangely fascinating. “Only now do we realise it’s because the kids had the best eyesight,” she laughs. These fragments of kitchen life, once mundane, have transformed into treasured recollections that anchor the sisters’ shared heritage.

Heart and heritage in the kitchen

Today, those memories continue to live on in what Eunice calls her “dream kitchen”. The space, which blends South American ashwood and honed marble, is designed to feel serene, tactile, and unmistakably hers. Every piece of stone and grain of wood tells a story, contributing to a room that feels both grounded and elegant. But beyond aesthetics, it was designed as a space that can support the way Eunice’s family cooks, entertains, and gathers.

This is where V-ZUG plays a transformative role. The kitchen is outfitted with a suite of V-ZUG appliances–from the V4000 Induction Hob to the V6000 Combi-Steam, V4000 oven, and warming drawer—all integrated seamlessly into the cabinetry, reinforcing the home’s overall calm, sculptural language. Eunice speaks with particular affection about the Combi-Steam oven—an appliance that has not only replaced her microwave but also redefined her approach to cooking. “Giving up a microwave was the best decision our family ever made,” she declares. “The Combi-Steam has completely changed the way I cook.”

For baking, a cornerstone of her time with her daughter, the V-ZUG oven has been a revelation. “Having an oven that bakes evenly every single time is a godsend,” she shares. The move has even inspired her daughter to bake more frequently, turning the kitchen into a creative playground across generations. The warming drawer, too, has become indispensable, ensuring that food stays warm and ready during gatherings—an invaluable feature for Eunice and her husband, who love to entertain at home.

Recently, Eunice and Julie spent an afternoon in this very kitchen recreating three of their grandmother’s signature Peranakan treats: kueh lapis, pulut hitam, and kueh tutu. What was once a complicated, labour-intensive process unfolded with an elegant ease, thanks to the precision and reliability of V-ZUG. The sisters layered their kueh lapis in the oven (confident that each tier would brown evenly); prepared the coconut filling on the induction hob before steaming delicate, velvety-soft kueh tutu  in the Combi-Steam while keeping their pulut hitam warm and ready in the warming drawer. Supported by intuitive tools and thoughtful design, they found themselves cooking the way their grandmother once did: side by side, laughing, tasting and instinctively trusting the process.

Designing a home that honors craft, continuity, and quiet luxury

For designer Terrence Quah, these experiences are precisely what the home was designed to nurture. A handcrafted yacht model the owners created years ago was the source of inspiration for the home’s design language—marked by fluid movement, openness, and a connection to nature.

“In the kitchen, the intention was to keep everything calm, seamless and uncluttered,” says Quah. For Architology Interiors, longevity and day-to-day comfort are essential considerations in design. Ease of maintenance, timelessness, and practical servicing were meticulously planned—even the living room flooring uses a click-in system for future replacement. This philosophy extends naturally to his choice of appliances. “V-ZUG was a natural fit because its ideals align with ours: reliability, precision, and a design language that elevates without shouting,” he explains.

Quah describes V-ZUG’s approach to sustainability as one without compromise—a quality he values deeply. “Real sustainability is about systems that last, that continue to serve the homeowner without becoming obsolete,” he says. This mission aligns with Architology’s own ethos of “cultivating a culture of honour”: towards the client, the environment, and the craft of design itself.

For the sisters, the kitchen is now more than a functional space; it is a vessel of memory and a bridge that connects the past and present. “Cooking has always been our love language,” Eunice remarks fondly in the video’s closing moments. “And recreating our grandmother’s recipes here…it feels like we’re keeping her spirit alive.”
