State-of-the-art appliances from Fisher & Paykel are a seamless part of this home in Australia, which also celebrates the historic roots of the house

When it comes to creating a liveable abode fit for raising a young family in, it is often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home. After all, this is where meals are prepared to nourish the family, where children develop their earliest memories of the joys of food, and where parents and kids alike can catch up before going about their day.

It is no wonder this adage struck a chord with a family with two young sons when they engaged design firm Flack Studio to redesign Sandy Bay, their 1970s merchant home in the city of Hobart in Tasmania, Australia. “What we wanted for the home was a lifetime of memories and for the boys to grow up and feel comfortable in,” says the wife.

Interior designer David Flack, who admired the strong, ‘70s-influenced aesthetic of the home, used this insight to inspire a design that would address the needs of contemporary family life. “Our brief for Sandy Bay was to create a family home that would transcend all those special moments in life,” says Flack. “It was not simply about replicating the style of the era, but rather drawing upon it to create a sense of personality.”

To honour the building’s heritage, the design studio curated a series of finishes that spoke of the home’s past while maintaining a sense of relevance in the present. For example, Flack picked metals such as copper and brass to evoke a more handmade feel. “I selected finishes that were prevalent in the 1970s, but also in more neutral colourways. For example, terrazzo was quite popular then, as was stone walling and brick detailing,” he says.

Knowing that the centre of the home was the kitchen, the team paid special attention to creating a space that would be nurturing yet practical at the same time. Terrazzo flooring and wooden cabinetry stained in a serene blue lacquered finish form the backbone of the kitchen, evoking a timeless appeal while acknowledging its period influences. To contribute to the streamlined, modern look of this space, two of the home’s largest domestic appliances—Fisher & Paykel’s French door refrigerator and DishDrawer dishwasher—are cleverly concealed within the cabinetry.

The home is set on an elevated site that offers beautiful views of the surrounding woods, and Flack wanted to emphasise this idyllic setting within the kitchen. A pair of Fisher & Paykel ovens in a sleek, all-black finish appear like mirrors, reflecting lush views of the greenery indoors. Next to the two ovens is a 90cm induction Fisher & Paykel cooktop, which blends seamlessly with the contemporary aesthetic of the culinary space.

“The Fisher & Paykel appliances in this kitchen seem like a natural fit. What I love about their products is how minimal they become in the kitchen, acting like a little canvas in themselves reflecting the view behind,” explains Flack. At the same time, the appliances’ clean-lined, mirrored door panels are an elegant match for this kitchen, compared to other stainless steel options available in the market.

Outside on the deck, a built-in grill was installed to complement the kitchen appliances, making it the perfect spot for leisurely weekend and holiday barbecues with friends and family. This deck is one of the many ways in which the loving parents hope to give their boys memories that will last a lifetime. In fact, the wife confided in Flack her desire for her sons to get married on the deck of their family home someday.

Touched by this sentiment, Flack reflects: “Design is paramount to our clients’ lives; it changed their lifestyle, the way they live, and all the family moments that will happen here. It has been a wonderful process designing Sandy Bay with our clients, and I hope that one day we’ll be back for the wedding on the deck.”
