State-of-the-art appliances from Fisher & Paykel are a seamless part of this home in Australia, which also celebrates the historic roots of the house
When it comes to creating a liveable abode fit for raising a young family in, it is often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home. After all, this is where meals are prepared to nourish the family, where children develop their earliest memories of the joys of food, and where parents and kids alike can catch up before going about their day.
It is no wonder this adage struck a chord with a family with two young sons when they engaged design firm Flack Studio to redesign Sandy Bay, their 1970s merchant home in the city of Hobart in Tasmania, Australia. “What we wanted for the home was a lifetime of memories and for the boys to grow up and feel comfortable in,” says the wife.

Interior designer David Flack, who admired the strong, ‘70s-influenced aesthetic of the home, used this insight to inspire a design that would address the needs of contemporary family life. “Our brief for Sandy Bay was to create a family home that would transcend all those special moments in life,” says Flack. “It was not simply about replicating the style of the era, but rather drawing upon it to create a sense of personality.”
