Welcome to Foodie Finds! This is an article series by Tatler, chronicling where and what to order according to the food-obsessed

I myself have never understood non-foodies. How can one not love flavours, spices, aromas and all the cultural nuances and memories that come with every bite? Dining is an experience meant to be savoured and is even more fun when shared with loved ones. Dining around a table means sharing, conversing, bonding and learning.

A dish can tell you so much about a person, a culture, and a country. It speaks volumes of a nation's history and is an art form on its own. Skilled hands are trained over years or are born out of pure passion and practice. Professional chefs and home cooks alike, from young stars to grandmothers, have been cooking up meals filled with emotion and have truly made us foodies, happy.

Through Foodie Finds, we ask our epicurean friends to share their favourites. In this feature, we tackle takeout and delivery. Hear what writer and avid foodie Philip Cu-unjieng, has to say. Take a look at some of his go-to shops for takeout.

1. Fook Yah

@fook.yah

This new Poblacion eatery specialises in Chinese roast dishes, a godsend for those feeling nostalgic for their pre-pandemic regular Hong Kong haunts. We love their fishball noodle soup, the crispy pork belly combined with their jellyfish with sesame oil, their extra fatty char siu, and roast duck. And you’ll totally appreciate how the noodle soups are delivered with the soup kept separate from the fishballs, noodles, and veggies. Fook Yah is a relatively new player, but they know their stuff.

2. Wildflour To Go

@wildflourtogo

Wildflour needs no introduction; and their affiliate brands, Wild Flour Italian, Little Flour, Pink’s, and Farmacy, have their devoted followings as well. So it’s really great how this website acts as an aggregator of all things Wildflour, and we can mix and match to our heart’s and tummy’s delight. Their focaccia variants are great, and I especially love how well their pasta dishes travel - their bucatini carbonara is still one of the best carbonara you’ll find in the city. That their famous breads and desserts are available as well, is the proverbial ‘cherry on the top’.

3. Sweet Ecstasy & Shake Shack

@shakeshackph and @sweetxmanila

If you’re in the mood for a quick lunch, or afternoon snack, of burgers; these are the two I yield to, and will highly recommend. They’re dependable and noted for their consistency. At Sweet Ecstasy, I’ll go for their Steamburger; and when feeling indulgent, the grilled cheese cheeseburger. In the case of Shake Shack, when you’re in the running for a burger with a touch of spiciness, head to their SmokeShack, with the smoked bacon, and chopped cherry peppers. Or go meat-free, with the ‘ShroomBurger.

4. Cafe Fleur

@cafefleur.ph

Now that good friend chef Sau del Rosario has his Poblacion establishment, there’s no excuse for not discovering his crispy pork belly truffled macadamia kare-kare. This one is downright ambrosial, and I defy anyone to try this and not believe it’s one of the ultimate of Filipino dishes to feast on. For something refreshing, go for Sau’s Burrata Salad, as it’s a giant dollop of Burrata, with slices of strawberries and tomatoes in a rich pesto sauce. And save room for dessert, as his maiz de brazo surrenders to no one!

In the home kitchen categories, I’d highlight two purveyors for the way they’ve brought luxe comfort food to a new level, and make ‘dining out’ in the comfort of your home a real experience.

5. NawwTy’s Kitchen

@nawwtyskitchen

First: NawwTy’s Kitchen is one of the originals, upgrading home-cooked meals to a point where it felt like you were dining out. Tatler has cited Mulberry at Forbestown in the past, and while it didn’t survive into our first pandemic year, the option to get home service of these great dishes remain intact. The crab fat paella, festooned with chicharon, is one of their signature dishes; and there’s a pinakbet paella with bagnet. They have old school fudge brownies that everyone I’ve offered them to have really loved. Indulgent, yes; but this is YOLO food, so stop trying to resist.

6. Precious Recipes by Peachy Mathay

@preciousrecipes.mnl

This is a new, late 2021 discovery, and the kitchen is known for three specific dishes. There’s the Hainanese chicken with three sauces, and you’ll love the chilli-ginger sauce, and the expertly done chicken broth steamed rice. Then there’s the generous Malaysian laksa (one order feeds 4-6 persons), and the Bacalao a la Vizcaina. What I loved about Peachy Mathay’s kitchen from the first time I ordered the Hainanese chicken was the attention to detail in the packaging, how they came in sturdy boxes, and didn’t spill or become messy.
