We speak to Upper House’s founders, Alex Cheah and Kelvin Cheah, who share more about the exciting new concept

The stark contrast between the rooftop glasshouse that sits on the top two floors of B Hotel Kuala Lumpur and the charming, chaotic bustle of the surrounding neighbourhood is undeniable. Located along Petaling Street, and unlike other speakeasy-style eateries or bars that seamlessly blend amongst the old buildings, Upper House is as modern and purpose-built as a restaurant can get. The idea for Upper House, a modern Asian rooftop eatery, was born post-pandemic, to showcase contemporary Malaysian cuisine in a tourist-friendly area. The entire two floors that house the concept, levels seven and eight, are completely new, built on top of the six-storey B Hotel.

When it comes to the food, innovative sharing plates, conceptualised by executive chef Raymond Tham, take inspiration from Chinatown, namely the surrounding hawker stalls. Think crispy chee cheong fun with Wagyu char siew, claypot rice bowls, and rice wraps with seaweed and prawns—elevated takes on nostalgic dishes. As the sun sets, Upper House also serves a series of crafted cocktails, with live entertainment and performances throughout the night.

In the long run, its founders, Alex Cheah and Kelvin Cheah, hope Upper House will become a collection of rooftop restaurants, each inspired by its surrounding neighbourhood.

About

Raisa, our Dining Writer, grew up in a multicultural household where food was more than just a meal—it was a way of expressing love. With Malay, Chinese, and Indian heritage, she was constantly surrounded by diverse flavors, home-cooked feasts, and the joy of sharing meals with family.

Her passion for food deepened during her studies in the UK, where she experienced vastly different dining cultures. A firm believer in the power of food to tell stories, she loves traveling, experimenting with local dishes, and uncovering hidden gems to share with others.

When she’s not writing about food, she’s likely munching on chips, chocolates, or whatever snack is within reach.
