Alex Cheah

A prominent force in redefining Malaysian hospitality through creative, heritage-inspired and concept-driven dining experiences

As one half of the twin brother duo behind the Karls Group, Alex Cheah has been instrumental in redefining Malaysia’s contemporary dining scene. Through celebrated establishments such as Beta KL, Skillet KL, Upper House KL, and Supernormal, Cheah has combined entrepreneurial vision with a deep respect for Malaysia’s diverse culinary heritage. His approach—fusing tradition with innovation—has earned global recognition, with Beta KL receiving a Michelin star and Skillet KL being selected for the Michelin Guide. Together with his brother Kelvin Cheah, he continues to champion Malaysian cuisine on the international stage, promoting it as both an art form and a cultural identity.

In 2025, the Cheah twins expanded the Karls Group portfolio with Social Room, a cocktail bar in Menara Milenium catering to Kuala Lumpur’s corporate crowd with inventive cocktails, timeless classics, and zero-proof creations. An adjacent all-day bistro, Rhea, is set to follow, extending the group’s lifestyle-driven hospitality concept. Their forthcoming lifestyle and sports hub, which integrates fitness, recreation, and fine dining, further reflects their commitment to innovation and to nurturing a new wave of Malaysian hospitality that bridges culture, creativity, and community.
