Homegrown botanical gelato brand Birds of Paradise marks its 10th anniversary with a new Chinatown address, an exclusive black sesame and ginger gelato and a decade of giving back
Birds of Paradise is entering its second decade with a new boutique in Chinatown. Opening this month at 28 Pagoda Street, the new outpost brings the homegrown botanical gelato brand into one of Singapore’s most culturally significant neighbourhoods, with a space inspired by the area’s heritage and an exclusive flavour created in its honour.
The boutique’s design takes cues from the proscenium arch, the framed entrance that traditionally separates the stage from the audience in Chinese opera. The reference is particularly fitting for Pagoda Street, which hosted Cantonese opera performances before the 1980s. Archways frame the space, while seating areas invite guests to linger over a scoop or gather with friends. Alongside its signature gelato, the boutique will introduce a range of botanical beverages made with ingredients that also feature in its frozen creations. Shelves will carry exclusive merchandise and botanical products.

Created especially for the new address, the black sesame ginger mochi gelato draws inspiration from tang yuan served in ginger soup, a familiar Chinese dessert. It reimagines the combination of black sesame-filled glutinous rice balls and fragrant ginger broth as a gelato, bringing together two flavours closely associated with Chinatown’s culinary heritage.
The opening comes as Birds of Paradise celebrates 10 years since its beginnings in Katong in 2016. Founded on the idea of making gelato inspired by the botanicals of nature, the brand has built its range around real fruits, flowers, herbs, spices and other natural ingredients, which are infused with care to draw out their aromas and flavours. Its creations take inspiration from the diverse botanical ingredients of Southeast Asia, from white chrysanthemum to pandan coconut caramel.

Beyond its approach to gelato, the brand has also made giving back part of its founding philosophy. Guided by a quintuple bottom line of Prosperity, People, Planet, Purpose and Paradise, Birds of Paradise has dedicated one Sunday’s sales to its long-term charity partner Equal every anniversary since its third year. The organisation works with animals to deliver animal-assisted programmes for vulnerable individuals and communities, including children, youths, persons with special needs, families and seniors. Its ongoing partnership reflects the brand's belief in sharing its success and making a positive contribution to the wider community.
Ten years on, Birds of Paradise continues to build on the ideas that shaped its beginnings: a curiosity for botanical ingredients, an appreciation of Southeast Asia’s natural bounty and a commitment to creating experiences that bring people together. Its new Pagoda Street boutique offers another setting in which to bring these ideas to life.
