More than just a drink for special occasions, the second release in The Macallan A Night on Earth series is a lush experience from start to finish. It comes in a gorgeous and evocative multi-layered pack, designed in collaboration with acclaimed Chinese mixed-media artist Nini Sum.

“The collaboration with Nini Sum focuses on the idea of bringing something special back to your family when you return home: the coming together of old friends and family, with reflection on the past year, and hope for the coming one,” said Jaume Ferras, global creative director at The Macallan. Indeed, unboxing the whisky becomes a journey in itself, richly inspired by Sum’s heartwarming memories of the New Year from back home.
As you peel back each layer, you’re transported from a landscape of mountains and the vast, starlit night sky to contemporary urban scenery representing the mass movement of locals out of the city, eager to reunite with their loved ones. Finally, at the third layer with its orange and yellow tones, you arrive at the warmth of lantern light and the feeling of coming home.
“The steam coming off hot food during the New Year dinner is one of the most vivid ‘home’ feelings I remember. I wanted to re-create that atmosphere, those precious moments of gathering and reunion under a bright moon bringing us all together,” the artist remarked. She added, “During this time of the year, people who work in big cities go through the world’s largest annual human migration to go back to their hometowns for that moment of reunion with their families and friends. When the fire is lit inside and paper lanterns hang from the roof, you know there is someone there waiting for you to come home so they can welcome you with a hot meal and a hug.”

The magic of A Night on Earth - The Journey only continues to unravel when you uncork the bottle. The limited-edition whisky was made using a harmonious combination of The Macallan’s exceptional sherry-seasoned European and American ex-bourbon barrels, boasting a unique flavour profile that incorporates Sum's most cherished memories.
Each sip is a decadent trip down memory lane, from the effervescent pop of fireworks to the comforting sweetness of milk candy and steamed rice pudding. Complementing its toasted oak aroma, the whisky also has a nuttiness, echoing the sunflower seeds shared amongst Sum’s family as they laughed and discussed their wishes for the New Year.
