The Macallan dives into the inherent connection of two strong flavours in its latest single malt series

For fans of dark and robust flavours, whisky and coffee are easily a match made in heaven. A distinguished master in developing evocative tastes and spirits, The Macallan explores the synergy of these drinks in the second edition of The Harmony Collection, a limited annual release series driven by the brand’s inherent curiosity and creative mindset.

This year’s release presents The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica, a single malt whisky that draws inspiration from the Arabica beans of Ethiopia, the renowned birthplace of coffee. An intensely flavoured blend, the decadent expression perfectly captures and celebrates the intricacies of a world that’s richly steeped in tradition.

The Macallan Whisky Maker Steven Bremner immersed himself in the art of coffee, as he hosted a masterclass with world-renowned experts at The Macallan Estate. There, he learned about the incredible journey from field to cup, uncovering the unique process and distinct flavour profiles at every stage. The esteemed guests in attendance included Ethiopian coffee grower Kenean Asefa Dukamo, acclaimed Scottish coffee roaster Lisa Lawson, award-winning American barista Andrea Allen, UK-based coffee artist Dhan Tamang, as well as coffee historian and professor Jonathan Morris.

“Exploring the world of coffee with our masters in the industry, who shared their knowledge, creativity and love for their art, was both an education and an inspiration,” Bremner mused. “There are many parallels between the approaches to creating incomparable whisky and coffee. Each requires unique skills and craftsmanship to achieve depth and complexity of taste. Both worlds aim to deliver an extraordinary consumption experience.”

The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica is reminiscent of a strong espresso, firstly captivating the senses with aromatic notes of tiramisu, almonds, raisins, gingerbread, sweet oak and vanilla. These decadent elements are likewise captured on the palate, along with flavours of dark chocolate, Brazil nut and blackberry as well as hints of spice. It finally concludes in a long and satisfying finish, one that evokes a well-balanced dark roast coffee blend.

To achieve this, Bremner harnessed the intense notes in traditional sherry-seasoned European oak casks to reflect the coffee’s distinctive flavour profile. He then combined this with the influence of sherry-seasoned American oak casks, adding sweeter and softer vanilla notes that culminate in a rounded experience.

As another homage to the edition’s main inspiration, each bottling is presented in an innovative and beautifully crafted box that incorporates repurposed coffee bean husks, a by-product of the coffee-making process that would’ve otherwise been discarded. Working closely with Michele Posocco of the Italian paper mill Favini to create this, The Macallan underlines its sustainable and inventive future. More tributes to coffee are evident in the coloured details of the packaging, as the striking red on the pack evokes the cherry-like coffee fruit.
