Have you ever tried a cocktail made with duck fat-washed rum or coconut fat-washed gin?

While it is common to find restaurants that make use of local produce in their dishes, it is rare to find cocktails that evoke memories with Malaysian ingredients. From assam boi to tau foo fah, nostalgic flavours of the homeland are celebrated through creative cocktails served at these ten bars, just in time for the Merdeka celebrations.

Bar Trigona

Celebrating locally-sourced ingredients from Malaysian farms, Bar Trigona’s latest menu features homegrown produce such as Malaysian cocoa, honey and figs. For instance,the Terroir cocktail uses ingredients from Trigona Farm, Bar Trigona’s own plot of land in Pahang where fruit, herbs and spices featured on the menu are grown. Drawing inspiration from the local favourite drink limau assam boi, kedondong and lime from Trigona Farm are combined with assam boi-infused tequila, Cointreau, and cacao honey to produce this refreshing cocktail.

OneSixFive Lounge

OneSixFive Lounge at InterContinental Kuala Lumpur has collaborated with Mizukami Collective to present a menu featuring seven cocktails, each inspired by different regions across Asia. The cocktail inspired by Kuala Lumpur is the Pacific Swallow, made with a base of rum and campari, deriving its flavours from pineapple, ginger, honey and lime. Crafted by Shawn Chong, founder of the Mizukami Collective, the collection also features three zero-proof cocktails, ideal for guests who do not consume alcohol.

Willow Kuala Lumpur

Inspired by the Singapore Sling, Willow Kuala Lumpur’s Sandakan Sling is comprised of gin, vermouth, coffee, tonic and lihing, a local rice wine from Sabah. Other cocktails on the menu that make use of local ingredients include the Pandanesia which is infused with pandan and calamansi, and the Willow Peach Punch which uses lychee liquor and longan and peach tea.

Pahit

Pahit is known for creative spins on gin and tonics, and for good reason. Calamansi, assam boi, jackfruit, lychee and ginger flower are just some of the local ingredients that flavour their gin and tonics. The Coconut Clover Club cocktail infuses coconut into a classic clover club cocktail, featuring coconut-fat washed gin and coconut purée, and is topped with a white chocolate-coated raspberry.

Reka:Bar

Situated in Bukit Damansara, Reka:Bar is known for their innovative and experimental cocktails. The Strawberry Feels cocktails features a 3D strawberry kombucha, incorporating strawberries in three forms: strawberry mint from local farm A Little Farm on the Hill, fresh strawberries and strawberry tea. A twist on the Jungle Bird, pineapple and coconut shrub made in-house are also components of the cocktail, which has a base of Campari and Bacardi Cuatro.

JungleBird

Describing itself as a 'tropical rumah rum’, JungleBird sources rum from around the globe so customers have an ever changing selection to choose from. While the rum may come from different countries, many of their cocktails feature local flavours such as the Klarified Klaiprinha which contains honey jackfruit and the Soul Happiness which pairs cumin, ginger and pandan. Alternatively, try the Mossack Fon’seco which makes use of sugar cane reduction, fermented mango and assam.

Jann

Situated in the heart of Chinatown, Jann at Four Points Kuala Lumpur pays homage to the traditions that make the area a cultural destination. Bold flavour combinations are present in the cocktail menu, ranging from the Sei Ngan Chai cocktail made with duck fat-washed rum and soy sauce inspired by the famous roasted duck vendor along Petaling Street to the Ba Kwa concoction made with meat jerky. This writer’s personal favourite is the Tau Foo Fah, which contains spiced rum, baileys, ginger palm sugar and of course, silken tofu.

Looking for a quick fix? Tap Tap has you covered with a draft system that allows cocktails to be poured in less than half a minute. The current menu features a selection of locally-inspired cocktails, such as the Kat Chai Fizz, which draws flavours from calamansi, salted plum and kaffir lime, while the Tuak My Life makes use of Sarawakian rice wine. New cocktails you can expect this season also include the Puppy Love, which contains pandan, lime and barley.

Located along Chinatown’s Petaling Street, PS150’s toy shop-fronted bar is housed in a pre-war shop lot. The Rumble In The Jungle cocktail is PS150's personal take on the Jungle Bird, paying homage to flavours from home through coconut and pandan-infused rum, gula Melaka and aromatic curry leaves.
