More cafés are putting soy in the spotlight by serving classic and contemporary delights

Silky smooth and oh-so satisfying, there are few things better than a comforting scoop of tau fu fah or a creamy sip of fresh soy milk after a long day. Luckily for us Malaysians, the Klang Valley is filled with a myriad of soy speciality cafés, from Dáo and Bean Jr to Soylab and Soyya.

From soy soft serve and soy shaved ice to traditional desserts and soy-based drinks, here are eight spots in the Klang Valley where you can curb your soy cravings.

Dáo

Dáo’s offerings often see a cheeky play on words—its classic Dáo Fu Fah can be served with ginger, brown, white, or chrysanthemum syrup and garnished with toppings such as red or black sesame paste, osmanthus jelly, and pumpkin glutinous rice balls.

Meanwhile, their Dáo Nai (soy milk) can be made with white or black soy beans; the latter has a surprising green tinge, but shouldn’t be mistaken for matcha.

Soylab

Soy enthusiasts are spoiled for choice at Soylab, where the extensive menu ranges from soy shaved ice and soy waffles to “soyffle” pancakes. Of course, the café also serves classic beancurd, spruced up with toppings such as pumpkin paste, glutinous rice balls, and black sesame.

Huáng Soy Bar

Huáng Soy Bar specialises in fresh soy milk, tau fu fah, and shaved ice. Its bestseller, the Huáng Signature, comes with bouncy sweet potato and taro balls and is topped with grass jelly, whereas the Huáng Bowl is a riff on ais kacang.
