Simple, festive, and fit for a crowd—these five cocktail recipes are just what you need for your New Year’s Eve celebrations

As those of us with a penchant for hosting know all too well, there will be nights when you spend the entire evening chained to the kitchen or the bar. Oftentimes, it's a labour of love, and may even be an ideal picture of an evening well spent. But for special, unmissable gatherings like Christmas or New Year’s Eve, it can be the biggest nuisance, constantly lured away from the dinner table or conversation to replenish bites and sips here and there.

This New Year’s Eve, prepare your cocktails ahead of time and spend some quality, worry-free time celebrating with your friends and family. These five recipes, ranging from classic to unconventional, are not only easy to prepare but easy to scale up for a crowd. Fruity, citrusy, spicy, herbaceous, or even somewhere in between—the choice is yours. You are the host, after all.

A summer staple in England, Pimm’s cup is an enjoyable, low-ABV cocktail. A mixture of soda, syrup, and an assortment of fruits, the bubbly drink primarily relies on the eponymous ingredient, Pimm’s No 1 Cup—a bittersweet, gin-based spirit. Fruity and refreshing yet mildly spiced, it’s a crowd-friendly drink that’s hard not to love—and can easily be fortified by a splash of gin.

Tatler Trivia: Pimm’s was initially invented as a health drink, infused with fruits and spices believed to aid in digestion. Bottoms up!

When preparing cocktails for a large group, consider brewing up a white sangria. Though not as popular as the traditional red sangria, it is far easier to clean up in the case of spillage. Plus, the elegant punch is perfect for festive occasions like New Year's Eve, especially when made bubbly with a top-up of sparkling water. Get creative and use whichever fruits are in season!

As its name suggests, the L’Aventura (which is Italian for “the adventure”) might be intimidating at first glance. Created by Daniel Osborne, bar manager at Bullard and Abigail Hall in Portland, the punch utilises Amaro Montenegro—a potent Italian digestif that blends 40 botanicals (most notably vanilla, orange peel, and eucalyptus) to produce a complex, bittersweet liqueur. But fret not—Osborne’s punch is wonderfully balanced, achieving a crowd-friendly cocktail that’s herbal, fruity, minty, floral, and truly one-of-a-kind.

When one thinks of New Year’s Eve, bubbly, refreshing tipples immediately come to mind. The French 75 is a natural fit. Made with gin, lemon juice, syrup, and sparkling wine, the chic cocktail is simple and elegant. With a wonderful burst of citrus from the lemon, you can toy around with different gins to achieve your desired flavour profile. Perhaps one that leans even further into the realm of citrus or other fruity notes, or balances it out with some herbaceous aromas. Once you’ve got it sorted, it’s a breeze to make.
