You read that right - Solaire's Japanese restaurant Yakumi launches its Sunday Brunch Buffet with eight live cooking stations, a generous à la carte menu, and impressive desserts and tipples to boot

Meet your newest Sunday ritual: a Japanese brunch buffet at Solaire’s Yakumi restaurant, now happening every week. With eight live cooking stations, a generous à la carte menu, and an inspired beverage listing with Japanese cocktails and a sommelier-curated sake selection, you’d best arrive early... and stay late.

As regular Yakumi patrons may know, the restaurant has opened for brunch in the past, though never to the scale of this all-you-can-eat feast. This newly-launched brunch buffet showcases the “best of Yakumi menus”, beams vice president of food and beverage Bastian Breuer. Naturally, the Yakumi standard for top-quality fare remains as well. “For the Japanese, the freshness of the food is a religion,” Breuer shares, “quality is not up for discussion.”

Yakumi’s Sunday brunch buffet is truly a multi-sensory experience, meticulously planned down to the theatrical lights designed to spotlight the pristine ingredients - an opportunity for diners to “really reward themselves”, as Breueur explains. Ultimately, however, the meal is an ode to the Japanese art of shun: the freshness of the ingredients, fortified by showmanship, the craftsmanship of the chef, and visual appeal.

Make your way to their dedicated oyster station, where the luxurious delicacy glistens amidst all the theatrics. Even with the profuse Japanese fare on offer, Yakumi’s sushi station remains ever-popular, boasting the freshest sashimi flown in straight from Japan.

Picks from the tempura station are also among the highlights, including the classic ebi tempura. The fresh prawn is cooked to absolute perfection, which is a welcome reminder that the deep-fried version of the dish should never be impossibly firm. Coated with a batter so light it would be indiscernible if not for its loud crunch, the ebi tempura continues to be timeless.

Refashioned into their teppanyaki station, Yakumi’s second private room is now home to sizzling meats and vegetables, filled with an irresistible savoury fragrance. Among the seafood, the sizeable scallops are a sure-fire winner - wonderfully soft, you could enjoy it with a toothache. The cubes of USDA rib-eye steak were so succulent, you’re forced to devour them in one bite to prevent its juices from escaping your lips. Pair it with their house-made spicy teppanyaki steak sauce to excite the palate with warm spices and a vibrant kick from the cayenne.

When you’ve had your fill from Yakumi’s live stations, take a rest and order à la carte, with ramen, sukiyaki, and donburi now on the menu. From the mains, the buta kakuni and crispy chicken came highly recommended - and, for good reason. The braised pork belly was decadently fatty, packing delicious caramel notes. Meanwhile, the crispy chicken truly lived up to its name, producing an audible crunch, not unlike chicharron.

Cap off the feast with Yakumi’s dessert bento, which elegantly presents six artful Japanese-inspired sweets in a birchwood bento box. The set also comes with playful strawberry and yuzu lollipops, a spread of refreshing fruit, and three unabashedly umami ice cream flavours: black sesame, corn, and matcha. On your way out, don’t forget to stop by the candy trolley and take home some treats, too.
