The newest homegrown grocer brings a slice of Australia to the island with its expansive products, brunch offerings and experiential lifestyle experiences

Upper Jurong Road is often the last place we would find ourselves in, but that has changed with the recent opening of Australian-inspired homegrown grocer Surrey Hills Grocer at D’Arena. The new lifestyle space brings a slice of Melbourne to the island with its extensive Australian products that span food, snacks, wines and even skincare. Here are five reasons why you need to drive to Boon Lay to check out this space.

1. Homegrown Grocer

The past two years have seen many F&B businesses closing, which is why it is more important than ever to support local entrepreneurs. That said, Surrey Hills Grocer is the brainchild of Singaporean ex-banker Pang Gek Teng, who called Melbourne her home for five years.

In Australia, she got her first taste of running her own food business when she started a grain bowl concept called Surch, which showcased Australia’s best produce in one meal. She sold it to an Australian company (which eventually closed it due to Covid-19) and moved back to Singapore in 2020. Missing her second home so much, Pang decided to bring a slice of Australia to our shores with Surrey Hills Grocer.

2. Extensive Australian Products on Offer

Pang’s years of experience in Melbourne’s F&B scene allowed her to develop close working relationships with farmers and producers across Australia. Their offerings—most of which weren’t available in Singapore before—are now showcased in the 3,000 sqft space which evokes Australian farm vibes with its wooden arcs, soft ambient lighting and lush foliage.

Exclusive items include Koko Black, an iconic Australian chocolate brand; Stonebarn Truffle, one of the major commercial truffle producers in West Australia; and Rich Glen Olive Oil, a family-owned business offering olive oil-based foods and skincare products.

There is also a wine section dedicated to Australia’s best pours, as well as an ‘herbs and spices’ corner where you can find unique blends to make home cooking a breeze. For instance, The Surrey Blend is an all-in-one marinade, while the Campers’ BBQ Blend is created to suit all your barbecue needs.

Pang also strives to support local businesses, and she has partnered with local urban farm Straits Agriculture to offer its freshly picked greens in the produce section.

A visit here won’t be complete without trying the brunch offerings at Surrey Hills Café, located just outside the grocer. Here you will find brunch classics made with the fresh ingredients you will find at the store. Popular dishes include Avo, comprising sourdough bread topped with mashed avocado, whipped ricotta cheese and vegemite emulsion; and Crayfish Benny, an elevated take on the eggs benedict which sees the molten eggs paired with marinated crayfish, drizzled with crayfish reduction hollandaise, and set atop toasted English muffins.

The cafe also serves aromatic brews from Proud Mary Coffee; signatures include the classic Humbler blend, which boasts notes of chocolate and rich caramel.

For takeaways, you can head straight to the bakery and find in-house bakes and pastries to go.

Sustainability is a big part of the company ethos, which is why Pang only works with brand partners who share the same vision of making the earth a better place. One of these brands is Proud Mary Coffee, which harvests its coffee beans in a sustainable way. At the grocer, they only use environmentally friendly packaging such as paper bags and recycled paper cups.
