Ramadan bazaars have returned after a two-year hiatus—here are five to visit for delectable treats

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Ramadan festivities have been put on hold for the past two years. This meant no celebrating in big groups and no lively bazaars. Now that restrictions have been eased, our beloved Ramadan bazaars have returned, merrier than ever. On top of the popular Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar, one of the biggest bazaars in Singapore, other smaller scale ones have also popped up around the island—here are some to get you started.

1. Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar

Head to Wisma Geylang Serai for this iconic bazaar this Ramadan. Look forward to over 40 stalls, offering a mix of clothes, street food and Raya goodies. For classic street fare, visit the Ramly stall and savour juicy and utterly addictive burgers comprising succulent patties wrapped in fluffy eggs between toasted buns. Still feeling peckish? Go for a crisp vadai prawn fritter at The Original Vadai, Singapore’s longest standing vadai seller. Wash these treats down with a refreshing cup of coconut shake from Coconut Kelapa. From now until May 2.

2. Walk Thru Souq by Laloolalang

Come to this bazaar hungry, as Walk Thru Souq offers over 20 different halal food stalls, ranging from traditional to innovative fare. Roti John lovers can head to JohnJee and savour its Long John, a 12-inch roti john generously packed with sauces and toppings of your choice. Feeling adventurous? Opt for Kinglicious Popiah’s popiah begedil (vegetable fritters), which sees the traditional begedil filling wrapped in popiah skin, and deep fried till golden brown. The street food is served alongside a sweet kicap manis drizzle. End the night with a decadent Nutella cheese murtabak manis at Terang Bulan’s stall. This sweet treat features a steamed pancake stuffed with rich Nutella, cheese and condensed milk. From now until May 1.

3. Bazaarbox by Eatbox

Delight in mouth-watering bazaar favourites at Bazaarbox, Eatbox’s fourth addition to its MiniFest series. Select from a variety of toothsome bites, including halal homemade kimchi, pisang keju (banana fritters), and boneless chicken wings. For something more filling, grab a bowl of mee soto from The Chichis; or wonderfully smoked lamb ribs from Salai Concept. Complement your meal with a cooling cup of kattira (rose flavoured milk). Every Friday to Sunday from now until May 2.

4. Paradiso by Hao Mini Bazaar

If outdoor bazaars aren’t your thing, visit this mini indoor bazaar, located in Turf Club’s Paradiso by Hao. Anticipate a wide selection of food options from classic deng deng slices (thinly cut dried meat), to sweet and savoury Nutella keropok lekor (fish crackers). For something indulgent, pay a visit to Charkoi and dig into its Oreo and condensed milk char kway manis (sweet dough fritters). This dessert is basically golden brown you tiao coated in sweet condensed milk and Oreo crumbs. Balance the sweetness with its savoury options, like chicken floss, featuring the same crispy you tiao paired with light and fluffy chicken floss. From now until May 2.

5. Crane Raya Souk

Crane Raya Souk puts the spotlight on local home-based businesses. On top of fashion and home decor brands, look forward to a range of homemade bakes. Start with a visit to Mazaraat’s stall for a taste of artisan cheese before stopping by Bueno Palate for a plate of tahu berlauk. The latter is made from tofu and chicken blended with a medley of herbs and spices. It is then coated in breadcrumbs and fried until golden brown. Enjoy it with the stall’s homemade sambal kicap for an additional spice kick. From April 15 to 17, and 23 to 24.
