To help you find your new favourite egg tart, we asked the Tatler Singapore team to share some of their go-to spots for a bite of this comforting creation.

1. Tong Heng Traditional Cantonese Pastries

Tong Heng is one of those traditional pastry houses that never fail you, it's been my personal favourite for egg tarts since I was a child. First introduced to my dietary repertoire by my doting grandparents, these buttery, diamond-shaped morsels filled with egg custard (sweetened just right, in my opinion) have been satiating my sweet tooth through the years. It comes in a localised version with shredded coconut, but the original one is my forever fave.

2. L.E. Café Confectionary & Pastry

There are egg tarts, and then there are bean curd tarts, which are a signature of L.E. Café Confectionery & Pastry, the old-school bakery with an outlet at Mackenzie Road. The combination of silky-smooth, not-so-sweet soya bean filling and buttery crust is light on the palate—a good thing since they are sold in a box of eight and not individually. While my favourite is still the plain version, you can also get a box of assorted flavours, including longan, grass jelly and red bean.

3. Leung Sang Hong Kong Pastries

There should be no great egg tart debate because Leung Sang Hong Kong Pastries exists. The bakery is founded by Hong Kong-trained chef Chik Sang, who discovered the perfect egg tart by meticulously making each one with 120 layers of flaky goodness. And don’t be fooled by the sunshine yellow hue of the custard; the pastry isn’t cloyingly sweet, but instead hits all the right notes when you’re in the mood for an egg tart.

4. Joy Luck Teahouse

Joy Luck Teahouse is a Hong Kong-style cafe which is well-known for its mouth-watering egg tarts. I remember having it for the first time when a friend brought them over when she came for dinner and immediately I fell in love with the fragrant dessert. I love how the flaky pastry crust complements the smooth and creamy custard filling. The egg tart as a whole is not overly-sweet but packs a savoury and buttery punch that is just heavenly.

5. Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg Tart & Puff

If you, like me, need a sweet treat after a meal, these egg tarts can do just the trick. Just as decadent as Hong Kong egg tarts, these Portuguese tarts are prepared by hand and boasts a buttery and flaky pastry that’s generously filled with creamy custard. The tarts are then baked until beautifully caramelised at the top—have a bite and revel in its rich custard flavours. Crispy on the outside, yet soft on the inside, this treat is indulgent, to say the least.

6. Tai Cheong Bakery

When I am craving egg tarts, I usually walk over to Tai Cheong Bakery’s outlet in Holland Village and buy half a dozen of their classic egg tarts. What I like about their version is the crust—flaky and buttery, with just the right thickness that serves as the perfect vessel for the rich and velvety egg custard.

Since opening its flagship outlet in Singapore in 2016, the Hong Kong bakery has expanded the menu with local-inspired flavours like pandan, durian and cheese. But the traditional ones will always be my favourite.
