The Tatler Singapore team shares their go-to spots for a slice of chocolate cake
While pâtissiers are constantly coming up with new creations, we can agree that nothing beats a comforting slice of chocolate cake. From light and airy sponge cake to rich and decadent chocolate icing, the classic dessert can be found all across the island. Whether you prefer a slice that’s rich, light or extra indulgent, there is one for every tastebud. That said, we asked the Tatler Singapore team to share some of their favourite spots to visit for a slice of chocolate cake.
In case you missed it: 7 of the most indulgent chocolate desserts in Singapore
1. Pantler
Chocolate makes everything better, especially cake. As a child I was always envious of Bruce Bogtrotter in Roald Dahl’s Matilda, who eats an entire giant chocolate cake as punishment. What was supposed to be a traumatising scene instead made me dream of one day eating a chocolate cake as rich and fudgy, covered in such tantalising, glossy frosting. As I’ve grown older, however, my tastebuds have changed and while I still love a good old-fashioned sponge-and-frosting chocolate cake, I now prefer a variation of textures in my indulgence. I love some crunch, in contrast with velvety smooth chocolate ganache, and a bakery that does this combination perfectly is Pantler. Since first tasting it in 2014, I’ve found myself returning to the sophisticated yet indulgent Yatsura. Slice into the dark, glistening creation to reveal layers of hazelnut dacquoise, dark chocolate ganache and a crunchy hazelnut feuilletine. Absolutely divine.

2. The Pâtissier
Whenever I’m out to satiate a chocolate cake craving, I always ensure that the basic characteristics are met: luscious cake, sinful icing and extra chocolatey taste. But if I’m in the mood for something with a bit of crunch, I turn to The Patissier’s Double Chocolate Pralines. It was an accidental find several years ago as this homegrown patisserie happens to be a favourite of my family’s. We usually opt for its cult favourite Passion Fruit Meringue cake but upon discovering their chocolate cake range, deciding on which cake to order became a massive struggle.
The Double Chocolate Pralines cake sits on a crunchy, chocolaty crust with an exceptional pralines mousse that’s sandwiched between layers of chocolate mousse. The texture is soft and smooth with every bite except for the delightful crunch that instantly elevates this dessert—making it stand apart from most chocolate cakes out there. The cake is also made using Guayaquil Extra Bitter 64% dark chocolate from Cocoa Berry, so fans of semi-sweet chocolate will love this.

3. The Dark Gallery

I’m not big on cake but I love ice-cream, so my pick is The Dark Gallery’s Signature Dark Chocolate Ice Cream Cake. Dark, rich and smooth (yes, I’m still talking about dessert), this frozen treat boasts 80 per cent dark chocolate ice cream cushioned by light, fluffy chocolate sponge, topped with chocolate soil, cacao nibs, an artful row of chocolate tuille, chocolate and generous lashings of chocolate glaze. Each palate-pleasing mouthful is decadent without being too sweet, and the ice-cream remains stiff and cold till the final bite.

4. PS.Cafe
If you love chocolate as much as I do, PS.Cafe’s double chocolate blackout cake is a classic. Truly indulgent, this cake comprises light and moist chocolate sponge cake generously slathered with rich dark chocolate ganache. As if this isn’t chocolatey enough, the decadent cake is served with a glaze of hot fudge and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Each bite is as sinful as the next, without being too sweet.

5. Lana Cakes
I am a self-professed chocolate lover. When I am craving for the most decadent chocolate cake, nothing brings me joy more than Lana Cakes’ signature chocolate fudge. It’s a classic that has been on the menu since the cake shop was founded in 1975—and for good reason. Who could resist that light and soft-as-clouds chiffon cake generously coated in a deliciously sweet chocolate fudge? Definitely not me.
