Get your caffeine fix at these artisanal coffee spots around the island

There’s no better way to start the morning than with a comforting cup of coffee. On top of keeping us alert, a recent study by The Annals of Internal Medicine found that drinking coffee regularly can lower your risk of mortality. Fortunately for us, the island’s coffee scene is vibrant and bursting with new additions each month. 

This weekend, why not head out and grab a comforting cup of joe? After all, there are so many artisanal coffee spots to choose from.

Here are some places to hit up for your caffeine fix.

1. Baristart Coffee

This cafe, which originated in Hokkaido, Japan, is home to a range of delectable dishes and artisanal coffee drinks like latte, cappuccino, espresso and flat white. What makes their cuppa extra special is that they only use freshly imported Hokkaido Biei Jersey milk for their white coffee, which comes from brown Jersey cows. The milk has a rich taste, creamy texture and the right amount of sweetness that makes it suitable for their lattes—which they serve with adorable latte art. Not only does the milk provide the latte with that desired luxurious and milky mouthfeel, it also enhances the subtle coffee notes that make for a well-balanced beverage. Speaking of coffee beans, they only use high-quality Barista blend coffee beans with aromatic notes and robust flavours.

Apart from the signature lattes, the cafe also offers other drinks like americano, piccolo, espresso tonic and black cold brew.

2. Bearded Bella

Apart from Melbourne-inspired brunch fare, Bearded Bella also serves up a mean cup of Joe. Here, its beans are sourced and roasted in house. Try the house blend featuring a mix of Colombian and Burundi beans to offer a smooth cup with sweet and fruity notes. At this speciality coffee joint, look forward to a variety of fresh cups featuring beans sourced from independent farmers across the world. Besides classic black and white coffee, the joint also offers unique cups like the macadamia latte. While featured beans rotate regularly, you can expect brews like the light to medium Ethiopian gesha, a bright roast with fruity and earthy notes. 4. Kings Cart Coffee Factory

In addition to classic coffee offerings, Kings Cart Coffee Factory serves up innovative cups, including flat white, coconut latte and mocha bloom. The latter is a vegan concoction comprising Oatside chocolate milk, coffee and orange. Have a sip and revel in creamy and zesty flavours. If you need something with a kick, try its coffee cocktails, like the tropical cold brew highball, a blend of Singapore Dry Gin, Curacao and pineapple.

5. Kurasu Singapore

Kurasu brings Japan’s coffee culture to Singapore. Each week, beans are roasted in Kyoto, Japan before shipped here. For avid coffee fans, this speciality joint needs no introduction. With five outlets around the island, this muslim-owned brand offers a wide range of hearty dishes, pastries and coffee. While classic espresso-based drinks are available, try one of its signatures like the dark passion, comprising a blend of passionfruit reduction, espresso, soda water and lime. Single origin beans are also available for you to choose from, such as the Finca Veracruz that feature fragrant notes of green apples, figs and passionfruit.

7. Takagi Coffee

20. Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar

Nestled in an old hardware shophouse on Tyrwhitt Road in Jalan Besar is Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar, a place whose diverse range of coffee charms as much as its Art Deco exteriors. 

For a burst of unique flavours, try the Ethiopian Bensa Shanteweni, processed in an anaerobic environment for 72 hours to get a flavour profile that’s boozy and reminiscent of starfruit, mango, and cacao nibs. For a cup closer to home, go for the Indonesia Muhlisin, a sweeter coffee that carries notes of pineapple, rock melon, and Maraschino cherry.

21. Toby’s Estate Café & Roastery

Sip on a good cup of coffee as you look over the Singapore River. At Toby’s Estate Asian flagship at Robertson Quay, you’ll be treated to the signature African Mist, a fruity blend reminiscent of cherry, stone fruit and chocolate roasted specifically for cold brew.

There’s premium filter coffee on offer here, like the Arara variety of coffee from Amostra, Brazil, which has a fruity flavour profile tinged with citrus and milk chocolate. 

For an indulgent treat, go for the dulce de latte. It’s made with caramelised condensed milk, which adds an elevated, complex sweetness to the classic latte.

Uplift your spirits at Yellow Cup Coffee, who have made it its mission to champion happiness with a single cup of coffee. Here, you’ll be able to sip on coffees roasted on-demand with single-origin beans from Sumatra, Brazil, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Ethiopia. 

Go for the Yellow Cup Coffee Blend, which consists of beans from Brazil, Costa Rica, and Colombia—it’s fruity with hints of raspberry and citrus, rounded off with chocolate and caramel notes. Here, rest assured that its coffee is sourced with an expert eye—you’ll find a Brazil Caldas Royal here, a highland bean that produces a coffee with cherry and hazelnut notes, and a caramel finish. The Glasshouse also counts Colombia Fruta Madura in its offerings, a beautifully fruity coffee with a tart acidity.

26. Round Boy Roasters

Tucked in Jalan Bukit Merah, Round Boy Roasters offers a passion reserved for producing the best cup of joe for coffee aficionados. Here, beans sourced from Colombia and Ethiopia are degassed after roasting, ensuring that they retain their robust flavour for a complex coffee. 

Premium offerings include the Konga Amederaro, a bean grown in the Yirgacheffe highlands to produce a coffee with profiles of wild berries, black tea, and honey. The Santa Monica grown in the Armenia, Quindio region in Colombia is a good choice as well, which is fermented with dry anaerobic methods, dried, and placed in rum barrels for 20 days. The result is a coffee with strong notes of whisky and overripe apricots.

27. Apartment Coffee

Apartment Coffee’s coffee studio at its corner on Selegie Road provides a rich variety of premium coffees and blends. You can sip on coffee sourced from the main coffee-producing regions of the world. Beans from Kintamani, Bali, for one, are handpicked, dry fermented, then dried in a carbon-dioxide rich environment. It produces a full-bodied coffee with hints of redcurrant and a sweetness that’s best enjoyed sitting in Apartment Coffee’s calming, white interiors, savouring its depth and complexity.

28. Lucid

Lucid’s minimalist, industrial interiors provide a neutral canvas for the full experience of drinking its special coffee to wash over you. You get to choose the blend to make your favourite coffee classics from Americanos to flat whites, with a choice of the Blend 04, a medium-dark roasted espresso blend, or the Ethiopia Halo Berity G1 Natural. The former has a more dominant dark chocolate flavour profile with hints of caramel and toffy, while the latter is more fruity in taste, with notes of pomegranate and cacao when roasted black and hints of earl grey milk tea when roasted white. 

If you’re into filter coffee, you’ll have no dearth of options either. Go for the Ecuador Finca La Papaya JH 168h, a coffee reminiscent of rye sourdough, coconut, and olive oil.

29. Generation Coffee

Generation Coffee is shaking up the hawker centre scene by blending specialty coffee with local favourites at its humble corner at Tekka Hawker Centre. Beans are roasted every Monday and Thursday, ensuring a fresh cup of coffee no matter when you drop by. 

The Pioneer Blend here is a twist on the traditional local coffee, made with Brazil Arabica and Vietnam Robusta to mimic the boldness and intensity of the sugar or margarine that’s typically added in the roasting process, but omitted here. Enjoy it with condensed milk as a traditional kopi or evaporated milk as a Kopi-C, or simply with sugar with the Kopi-O. If not, go for a classic latte or espresso made with its range of coffee beans sourced from Colombia, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, and Indonesia.

30. PPP Coffee

PPP Coffee is the parent company of Chye Seng Huat Hardware, and at its small outlet at Funan, you’ll be treated to the same high quality coffee. The filter menu changes everyday with a different daily batch brew made with beans sourced from Brazil, India, Peru, Brazil, and Ethiopia. You’ll even be able to choose a filter coffee from a curated frozen collection of vintage coffees from 2009. 

If you’re looking for a twist on the classic iced latte, you’ll find that at PPP Coffee too. With the Papa’s Iced Coffee, you’ll get homemade coffee jelly with your latte to turn your midday perk into a dessert.

31. Upside Down Coffee Roasters

Upside Down Coffee Roasters’ mainstay at Amoy Street is famously known for their small 7oz cups, but don’t be fooled: they strive for balance and quality to make the perfect cup of coffee. In fact, Upside Down Coffee won second place in the Singapore National Barista Championships, so you know you’re in good hands. 

Try the beans sourced from the Frinsa estate in West Java, which is deliciously complex with notes of plum and maple syrup. The Shaia’an beans sourced from Al Qasr, Yemen are excellent to, which bring profiles of honey and dark cherry.

32. Glyph Supply Co

Glyph Supply Co is another minimalist café at Somerset with an impressive array of specialty coffee. Besides a simple coffee menu that includes an oat cold brew for a smoother finish, there’s an extensive filter menu that will please coffee connoisseurs.

If you’re looking for a fruity filter coffee, go for CCD Don Ruben No. 16 from Panama, which gives off complex flavours of stewed pineapple, mango, and hawthorn flower. The Finca El Retiro from El Salvador doesn’t disappoint either, with a taste reminiscent of stone fruits and black tea.
