Grab a bite at these dining places along the newly opened Thomson-East Coast line stations

The Thomson-East Coast line will be opening its third phase on November 13, allowing us to travel with ease all the way from Woodlands to Gardens by the Bay. The third phase sees 11 new stations: Stevens, Napier, Orchard Boulevard, Orchard, Great World, Havelock, Outram Park, Maxwell, Shenton Way, Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay. With the line beginning in Woodlands and stretching to Gardens by the Bay, our hunt for the best spots to eat has never been easier.

While we have a few more years to wait before the rest of the line opens up, this shouldn’t stop us from exploring the other areas. So, if you are looking to find your new favourite dining spot this weekend, here are five eateries to check out.

1. Grub

Located along Stevens Road is Grub, a casual neighbourhood bistro that dishes up hearty international fare with an Asian twist. Look forward to creative dishes, with popular favourites such as the har cheong fried chicken and waffles. An elevated take on the classic chicken and waffle dish, Grub’s version is served with a juicy chicken marinated in shrimp paste and deep-fried until crispy. Savoury flavours are balanced with sweet notes, thanks to the addition of maple syrup. If you’re not a fan of the sweet and savoury combination, try its succulent grilled ribeye steak, featuring rich beef flavours wonderfully complemented with a spicy and sour chinchalok salsa.

2. The Oyster Bank

You can’t take a trip to Great World without stopping by The Oyster Bank for plump oysters. Apart from the classic oyster served with lemon and tabasco, choose from a plethora of different toppings including the kimchi cucumber, mentaiko mayo and Bloody Mary. The latter is an oyster shooter—served in a shot glass, this creation sees buttery oyster bathed in a medley of tomato juice, vodka, Worcestershire sauce, tabasco and olives. Of course, non-oyster dishes are available, too, including the baked camembert drizzled with honey, and the Wagyu beef Karubi don. The latter is complete with the addition of shoyu shiitake mushrooms, onsen egg and crispy garlic chips.

3. Thai Kha

Those with a penchant for Thai fare can head to this restaurant—located a stone’s throw away from Havelock station—and revel in mouth-watering Thai street fare. whether you drop by for lunch or dinner, there are a range of delectable dishes to choose from. Then, sink your teeth into tantalising mains like the Thai green curry and phad Thai. The former is a staple and consists of a fragrant and rich soup base filled with brinjal, long beans and basil. While the latter is essentially soft rice noodles mixed in a medley of prawns, squid, and bean sprouts. It’s fried under a big flame, resulting in an aromatic dish filled with wok hei, and finished with a sprinkle of peanuts and chilli powder.

4. The Naughty Chef

If you find yourself feeling peckish near the Shenton Way station, head to The Naughty Chef and savour authentic Italian fare. A wide selection of tantalising dishes await—among them are the pork belly roasted to achieve a gorgeous crisp and crackly crust, and tender sirloin steak, beautifully grilled until tender and slightly smoky. Pizza lovers will not want to miss out on its selection of hand stretched pizzas. The pies are made with Italian double 00 flour to produce a soft and chewy crust. Try the crab and lemon, a slice layered with sweet crab meat, lemon slices and mozzarella.

5. Hortus

While wandering through Gardens by the Bay, remember to stop by Hortus for a bite. Located within the Flower Dome, this quaint restaurant allows you to delight in Mediterranean flavours while surrounded by the garden’s flora and fauna. Dig into inspired creations such as the amber jack crudo and lamb tagine. The amber jack crudo is decorated with pomegranate and lemon verbena, while the latter is cooked in a medley of sweet spices, prunes and apricots. These dishes are best complemented with a cocktail or two—the Hortus gin and tonic is elevated with the addition of infused peas and a garnish of pea sprouts.
