Spend a day exploring these must-visit food spots around the neighbourhood

As one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhoods, Tiong Bahru offers more than just art galleries and heritage trails. In fact, the quaint neighbourhood is home to an eclectic mix of food and drinks.

That said, the area wasn’t always as charming as it is, having previously been overpopulated and used for cultivating farmland during the early 19th century. It was in 1925 when the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) decided to redevelop the land, with the addition of new housing projects, a new drainage system and the levelling of hills.

Today, the estate continues to evolve, with new and exciting things to do, see, and of course, eat. So why not explore the area this week and indulge in some mouth-watering grub? Here are some to get you started.

1. House of Peranakan Petit

Those with a penchant for Nonya fare can revel in comforting Peranakan-inspired dishes at this restaurant, located within former Peranakan enclave, Eng Hoon Street. Chef-owner Bob Seah helms the kitchen, serving up an array of both classic and contemporary creations. Dig into the likes of selar sambal fish stuffed with rempah, Nonya crayfish, and juicy assam prawns. The Itek Sio is a crowd favourite, a traditional dish of succulent duck braised in tamarind and coriander until fork tender. End the meal on a sweet note with classic desserts including the pulut hitam complete with creamy coconut milk, and ubi kayu kuih (steamed tapioca cake).

Savouries are available too, like the smoked salmon squid ink roll that sees smoked salmon and rocket sandwiched between a black squid-ink bun; and roast beef croissant.
