When Chinese New Year comes, we can’t help but look forward to the signature and new bak kwa creations that will appear on the shelves and online shops of our favourite stores and restaurants. Who can resist these sheets of barbecued meat with a deep red hue that are cooked to a smoky and caramelised finish?
This year's plethora of offerings spans classic flavours and contemporary creations that are perfect for snacking any time of the day. Here are five of our favourites.
Old Seng Choon
Local pastry chef Daniel Tay and his team have given this ubiquitous CNY snack a contemporary spin with their newly launched black truffle bak kwa. Lean and fatty meat from the Brazilian hog variety are mingled with black truffle paste and white truffle oil and grilled in a charcoal oven for a sweet and smoky finish. The resulting caramelised sweetness is only enhanced by the earthy tones of the black truffle paste and white truffle oil.

They use premium ingredients to make the slices, and these are roasted over charcoal and turned constantly to ensure both sides have that same delicate smokiness and caramelised texture.
