Here are five cult films that we can't help but watch—ironically

There are films we celebrate for tackling life, diversity, and delicate issues. Admittedly, we also know a few titles that belong—perhaps not at all—at the deepest end of our movie playlist for being controversial or plain terrible. Yet, we delight ourselves in all its cringy and awkward glory.

Here are some of our favourites:

The Room

Bad transitions, unnecessary bed scenes, and poor delivery of lines are only some of the things that encompass Tommy Wiseau's The Room. The movie flopped when it came out in 2003 yet gained traction more than 10 years later, thanks to the internet for turning one of the lines, "Oh hi, Mark!" into a catchphrase.

The Wicker Man

Neil LaBute's thriller, The Wicker Man is a remake of the classic film of the same name. Despite the director's intention to recreate a classic into something more horrific, he has turned the film into something unintentionally funny. It's worth a watch especially if your humour falls into the absurd category.

The Happening

Comedians may have had their fun recreating the scene from The Happening featuring Matt Damon speaking to a plant (plantitos and plantitas might relate), but the movie has a few decent scenes that shock and scare. Sure, the acting was just as spine-tingling (not the good kind) as some of the horrors portrayed on screen, but it would have been a better film if it were to be recreated and executed better.

Mac and Me

Critics often compare Mac and Me with the well-received alien film, E.T. because of the similarities in plot and characters. This sci-fi flick is infamous for its laughable scenes, recurring product placements, and poor CGI, and that's frankly enough reason to watch Mac and Me.

Tatler Trivia: Even Paul Rudd finds the film so fascinating that he used a clip from the movie to 'troll' Conan O'Brien on the host's late-night talk show. The gag went on for years.

Space Jam

The comedy, Space Jam, starring NBA legend himself, Michael Jackson is a favourite among many basketball fans (especially sneakerheads). Granted that the movie should not be taken too seriously, it can still be exhausting to keep up with jokes that wouldn't fare well with audiences today and difficult to brush off the idea that the movie was inspired by a Nike ad. However, it's interesting to see the technology used in creating an amusing movie that merges real-life people with 2-D characters from the Looney Tunes.
