Looking for a horror film for a fright-filled movie night with your pals? These are the most popular hair-raising horror films from around the region

We may still be over a month away from Halloween but horror movies never get old and remain one of the top film genres, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC). Netflix recently revealed that in the APAC region, the viewing of horror television and films on the streaming platform grew 20 per cent from 2020 to 2021.

In the same period, the viewing hours of horror content in Southeast Asia increased even more, by over 40 per cent. 

As Asian horror films continue to keep us on the edge of our seats, we round up some of the most popular horror films from Southeast Asia over the years.

1. Incantation

As one of the highest-grossing Taiwanese horror films of 2022, Incantation is a must-watch if you are a horror film fanatic.

This Taiwanese supernatural film is shown as found footage and is narrated by a character named Ronan who encourages viewers to memorise an insignia and chant an incantation to send blessings and lift a curse on her six-year-old daughter. 

The story follows Ronan, her boyfriend and his cousin who accidentally breaks a religious taboo while documenting a ritual while filming. The trio then heads to a remote village to visit relatives who practice a type of religious worshipping that can possibly lift the curse. 

This mind-bender is interactive, completely eerie and a must-watch for fans of the genre. 

2. May The Devil Take You

May The Devil Take You is a 2018 Indonesian horror film written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto. The film follows Alfie, who is trying to find answers to her father’s mysterious illness. 

In her attempts to find answers, she visits her old house only to discover a supernatural presence that wreaks havoc on the family. 

Starring Chelsea Islan, Pevita Pearce and Samo Rafael, this is one film that will keep you up for days.

3. The Medium

The Medium is a 2021 Thai-South Korean supernatural horror film that follows a team as they travel to Isan, the northeast part of Thailand, to document the daily life of a local medium who has been possessed. Unfortunately, this encounter leads to extremely horrifying encounters when the ancestral spirit transfers into a new host. 

The documentary-style film was awarded the Bucheon Choice Award for the best film at the 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and was ranked 15th of all the films released in 2021 in South Korea with a gross amount of US$7.35 million.

The hair-raising film was also selected as the Thai entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. 

4. Impetigore

Impetigore is an Indonesian horror film that was written and directed by the iconic Joko Anwar. As one of Netflix’s most popular horror titles, this one is a must-watch.

The film follows a tollbooth collector in Jakarta who suffers a brutal attack. Shortly after, she inherits a house from her wealthy family. However, when she arrives to sell off the house, she discovers a far darker secret lurking in the village and linked to her terrifying attack. 

5. The Whole Truth

The Whole Truth is a petrifying Thai supernatural mystery thriller that follows two siblings who stumble across a strange hole in the wall of their grandparents’ home. The hole leads them to discover some very sinister secrets about their family.

When the film was released on Netflix it immediately shot to the top of the streaming site’s global top 10 non-English film rankings and stayed there for five consecutive weeks upon its release.
