From superhero stories to hopeful medical dramas, there’s something for every fan of Korean dramas in the new year

The world can’t seem to get enough of K-dramas, and their popularity had already been on the rise steadily by the time they skyrocketed astronomically with the phenomenal success of Crash Landing On You (2019) and Squid Game (2021), just to name two. Not one to rest on its laurels, the K-drama industry kept the momentum going in 2022, delivering engrossing content in a plethora of genres—from office rom-coms like Business Proposal (2022) to zombie horror show All of Us Are Dead (2022).

It seems the world can’t get enough, so here is our list of the most highly anticipated K-dramas to watch in 2023.

1. ‘Behind Your Touch’

The latest Korean rom-com series stars The Beauty Inside’s Lee Min-ki and Ressurection’s Han Ji-min. In the series, Han plays Bong Ye-bun, a vet with a superpower—she is able to see into the past of those who she touches. She teams up with detective Moon Jang-yeol (played by Lee) as they solve cases together.

2. ‘The Killing Vote’

Based on a webtoon of the same name, The Killing Vote follows police officers Kim Moo-Chan (Park Hae-jin) and Joo Hyun (Lim Ji-yeon). The duo hunt down a vigilante named Dog Mask, who executes criminals based on public voting.

3. ‘The First Responders 2’

This popular K-drama has returned for its second season and follows the same trio—detective Jin Ho-gae, fireman Bong do-jin and paramedic Song Seol. In the second season, we get to see the trio continue to save lives during times of tribulation. The series sees Gangnam Blues’s Kim Rae-won play as Jin, Aloners’s Gong Seung-yeon as Song Seol, and Reply 1994’s Son Ho-jun as Bong Do-jin.

4. ‘Moving’

This webtoon turned drama series follows a trio who have special abilities. Throughout the series, we see the trio, Kim Bong-seok, Jang Hee-soo and Lee Gang-hoon try to keep their powers from others while their parents attempt to shield them from being used by others. The series stars Go Yoon-jung as Jang, Han Hyo-joo as Lee, and Lee Jung-ha as Kim.

5. ‘Not Others’

Girls’ Generation’s Choi Soo-young is set to lead her first K-drama of the year, Not Others. Based on a South Korean webtoon of the same name, the latest series is a mother-daughter comedy drama with themes of family bonds. Choi plays Kim Jin-hee, a 29-year-old who is a patrol leader at a local police station. Starring alongside Choi is The Throne’s Jeon Hye-jin, The Empire’s Ahn Jae-wook and The Glory’s Park Sung-hoon.  

6. ‘Longing For You’

This mystery thriller drama follows detective Oh Jin-seong as he attempts to solve a murder case in Woojin. When his brother Jin-woo gets attacked and dies unexpectedly, Oh strives to get revenge on behalf of his brother. Detective Oh is played by Mr. Queen’s Na In-woo.

7. ‘Shadow Detective 2’

The second season of this thriller drama continues to follow veteran detective Kim Taek-rok, played by Reborn Rich’s Lee Sang-min. Kim gets transferred to the Women and Juvenile Affairs Division where he teams up with detectives Lee Seong-ah and Song Kyong-cheon to solve cases. The season also stars Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo’s Kyung Soo-jin and My Name’s Lee Hak-joo.

8. ‘D.P.2’

Popular K-drama series D.P. has returned for its second season. We see our favourite soldier duo, Private An Jun-ho (Jung Hae-in) and Corporal Han Ho-yeol (Koo Gyo-hwan) return to duty at the Deserter Pursuit unit. In the second season, new tragedy hits the unit, resulting in a complicated investigation. We see the unit track down alleged defectors as things take an unexpected turn.

9. ‘My Lovely Liar’

This new South Korean romcom stars Alchemy of Souls’s Hwang Min-hyun as Kim Do-ha and Moon Embracing the Sun’s Kim So-hyun as Mok Sol-hee. The series follows Mok, who has a special ability to distinguish lies, which she views as a curse. She gets involved with Kim, a music producer who has been accused of murder. While Mok is able to see that Kim is innocent, no one else does. We see the duo attempt to clear Kim’s name while developing a deep romantic relationship.

10. ‘King The Land’

Rom-com fans can revel in this new K-drama series featuring Korean singer Lee Jun-ho, Big Mouth’s Lim Yoon-a and Love to Hate You’s Ko Won-hee. The story follows Goo Won (played by Lee), the heir to hotel conglomerate King Group. After a car accident, he wakes up with amnesia and falls in love with Cheon Sa Rang (played by Lim), who attempts to help him remember. A romantic relationship develops as they attempt to overcome various life challenges.

11. ‘Bloodhounds’

The latest action K-drama series follows two young boxers, Kim Geon-woo and Hong Woo-jin. The duo becomes friends with a loan shark in search of money to take on a bigger threat. The King: Eternal Monarch’s Woo Do-hwan will star as Kim, while Hong is played by Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’s Lee Sang-yi. 

12. ‘See You In My 19th Life’

This fantasy rom-com tells the story of Ban Ji-eum (Shin Hue-sun), who has the power to remember all her past lives. Throughout the series, we see Ban as she tries to reconnect with people in her 18th life—one which had been cut short due to an accident. Currently in her 19th life, she reconnects with Moon Seo-ha (Ahn Bo-hyun), who she knew from her previous life. The story continues as the duo grow closer and fall in love. 

13. ‘The Devil’

This mystery-thriller drama revolves around Ku San-young (Kim Tae-ri), a student who has been possessed by a demon. Ku, together with Yeom Hae-sang (Oh Jung-se), a man who can see the devil, attempt to seek truth behind various mysterious deaths. 

14. 'My Perfect Stranger '

This new romance drama follows Yoon Hae-joon (Kim Dong-wook) and Baek Yoon-young (Jin Ki-joo) as they travel back in time to 1987. There, Yoon tries to solve a serial murder case while Baek tries to prevent her parents from getting together. Throughout the series, we see their lives get intertwined. 

15. 'All That We Loved'

EXO’s Oh Se-hun stars as Go Yoo in this heartwarming K-drama on young love and friendship. All That We Loved follows bestfriends Go Yoo and Go Joon-hee (Jo Joon-young). When Joon-hee falls sick, Go Yoo donates his kidney to him. After the surgery, Joon-hee begins suffering from cellular memory syndrome and starts acting like Go Yoo, adopting his mannerisms, habits and interests. Things get more complicated when the two friends start falling for new transfer student Han So-yeon (Jang Yeo-bin).

16. 'Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938'

This fantasy drama series returns for its second season. This time, the series sees Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook), a 1000-year-old Gumiho (mythical nine-tailed fox) that travels back in time to 1938. While trying to return back to the present, he meets other figures of his past life. Starring alongside Lee is All About Eve’s Kim So-yeon and Boys Over Flower’s Kim Bum. 

17. 'Race'

Phantom’s Lee Yeon-hee stars as Park Yoon-zo in this new office K-drama series. Throughout the series, we see Park’s journey as she joins a PR department of a large firm. There, she learns that her friend Ryu Jae-min (Hong Jong-hyun) is also in the company. We see the duo get closer as they blur the line between friendship and relationship. 

18. 'Paper Moon'

Inspired by the 2012 Japanese novel of the same name, this romance thriller series follows Yoo Yi-hwa (Kim Seo-hyung), a housewife that takes up a job at a bank. Throughout the series, we see her start to embezzle funds from various VIP accounts. Starring alongside Kim is Hi Bye Mama's Lee Si-woo and The Chaser's Seo Young-hee.

19. 'Bo-ra! Deborah!'

The latest romantic comedy series sees Snowdrop's Yoo In-na star as Yeon Bo-ra, a dating coach and romance author. Throughout the series, we see her work alongside publisher Lee Soo-hyuk (Yoon Hyun-min), who she has a love-hate relationship with.

20. 'Divorce Attorney Shin'

Fans of courtroom K-dramas can revel in this latest series that follows Shin Sung-han (Cho Seung-woo) a talented music professor who moves back to South Korea from Germany after hearing shocking news. Shin's childhood trauma leads him to work towards becoming a divorce lawyer. Throughout the series, we see Shin seek justice for misfortunate clients, while also searching for his own truths. 

The much-anticipated series also sees a stellar cast line-up including Hospital Playlist’s Jung Moon-sung, Hold Me Tight’s Han Hye-jin and Reply 1994’s Kim Sung-kyun.

21. 'Oasis'

Taking place in the 1980s and 1990s, this nostalgic K-drama follows Oh Jung-shin (Seol In-ah) as she moves from Seoul to the provincial town. Here, Oh forms a close bond between  Lee Doo-hak (Jang Dong-yoon) and Choi Cheol-woong (Choo Yeong-woo). Throughout the series, we see the trio go through life’s ups and downs—from fighting the injustices of their school to falling into a love triangle. 

22. 'Love to Hate You'

This highly anticipated K-drama will make you believe in the phrase “opposites attract”. The romantic comedy follows the story of Yeo Mi-Ran (Kim Ok-Vin), an attorney at Gilmu Law Firm, and actor Nam Kang-Ho (Teo Yoo). Throughout the series, we watch as the two opposing characters begin a love-hate relationship with each other, and eventually fall in love.

23. 'Queenmaker'

Upcoming K-drama by Oh Jin-Seok follows two women, Hwang Do-Hee (Kim Hee-Ae) and Oh Seung-Sook (Moon So-Ri), who come together to achieve justice, despite their differences. Hwang is a strategic planning team manager while Oh is running to become mayor. Throughout the series, we see the two women come head-to-head while slowly developing a heartwarming friendship.

24. 'Taxi Driver 2'

Lee Je-Hoon returns as Kim Do-Ki in the second season of crime thriller, Taxi Driver. Adapted from the webtoon The Deluxe Taxi, the new season follows Kim, a former special forces officer and his team, Rainbow Taxi. We see his team seeks revenge and justice for those who have been wronged. The series takes an even darker turn when we find that someone has been targeting Kim to know his whereabouts. 

25. 'Our Blooming Youth'

The latest historical romance follows Lee Hwan (Park Hyung-Sik), a crown prince who holds a mysterious curse following his brother's death. His life takes a turn when he meets Min Jae-Yi (Jeon So-Nee), who has been accused of murdering her family. A romantic relationship between the duo develops as Min helps to break him from his curse. 

26. 'Crash Course in Romance'

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’s director Yoo Je-won’s newest rom-com explores the cutthroat world of private education. The series follows Nam Haeng-sun (Jean Do Yeon), a banchan (Korean side dishes) shop owner, as she prepares her daughter for a university entrance exam. Nam’s world gets turned upside down when she runs into Choi Chi-yeol (Jung Kyung Ho), a charismatic tutor known for his unique teaching techniques.

27. 'Agency'

This office drama is centred around the career of Go A In, played by Lee Bo Young, South Korean actress known for starring in 2013 drama, I Can Hear Your Voice. With Go’s dedication to hard work and strong desire for success, she strives to become the first female lead executive in a major advertising agency and climbs up the corporate ladder. The series also stars Ghost Doctor's Son Na Eun and Be Melodramatic's Han Joon Woo.

28. 'The Girl Downstairs'

Based on the webtoon, Lee Doona, this romance K-drama is directed by Crash Landing on You’s Lee Jung Hyo and features A-list stars including My Country’s actor Yang Se Jon and Start Up’s Bae Suzy. Bae was also a member of the now-disbanded K-pop group, Miss A. The main character in the story is Won Joon (played by Yang), a college freshman who falls for his retired K-pop idol and neighbour, Lee Doo Na (played by Bae). Similar to Bae, Lee was the main vocalist of a popular K-pop band and has now retired to pursue her studies. We watch as the pair grow closer, eventually forming a romantic relationship. 

29. 'The Glory'

Song Hye-kyo reunites with The Descendants writer Kim Eun-sook in The Glory and plays a woman seeking revenge against her childhood bullies from high school. The trailer shows snippets of Moon Dong-eun (played by Song) hatching an elaborate scheme to turn the life of one of her newly-married classmates into a living nightmare. If the trailer's anything to go by, the drama feels ominous, dark and dramatic and definitely lives up to Kim’s desire for it to be remembered as “a grim drama, like a breathtaking sword dance”.

The Glory debuted on December 30 on Netflix; part 2 of the series will air in Mar 2023.

30. ‘A Time Called You’

In this remake of the hit Taiwanese TV drama Someday Or One Day (2019) director Kim Jin-Won takes us on a time-travelling love story starring Jeon Yeo-Been and Ahn Hyo-Seop. Consumed by grief over her boyfriend’s death, Han Jun-Hee (played by Jeon) somehow finds herself travelling back in time to live as high schooler Kwon Min-Joo. Here she meets fellow student Nam Si-Heon (played by Ahn), who reminds her of her late boyfriend. Romantic and emotional in equal measure, this Netflix show explores if true love can find a way to bridge insurmountable gaps.

31. ‘Mask Girl’

Directed by Kim Yong-hoon, this Netflix thriller, meant for an adult audience, is based on a popular Korean webtoon and follows the double life of Kim Mo-Mi (portrayed by Go Hyun-Jung), who makes up for her mundane office job by moonlighting as a masked performer on a live broadcasting platform. Her co-worker Joo Oh-Nam (Ahn Jae-Hong) finds out the real identity of Mask Girl and develops feelings for her. The story soon takes a dark turn when he goes missing, prompting his mother to start a desperate search.

32. ‘Celebrity’

This drama directed by Kim Chul-Gyu explores the grittier side of the glitzy influencer culture. Beneath the glittery surface of celebrity lifestyle there’s a dark underbelly of uncertainty, fear, struggles and heartaches, and this Netflix show exposes that with the help of cast members Park Gyu-Young, Kang Min-Hyuk, Lee Chung-Ah and Jeon Hyo-Sung. If you were ever sucked in by YouTuber drama, you’ll eat this one right up.

33. ‘Gyeongseong Creature’

This historical thriller by director Jung Dong-Yoon has started generating buzz among fans for its star-studded cast that includes Park Seo-Joon and Han So-Hee. Set in 1945 Gyeongseong, South Korea, under the Japanese regime, this Netflix series follows the wealthy Jang Tae-Sang (played by Park) and bounty hunter Yun Chae-ok (played by Han) as they fight monstrous creatures that have risen out of human greed.

34. ‘Daily Dose of Sunshine’

Based on the real-life experiences of a nurse, this medical drama set in a psychiatric ward of a hospital has an uplifting message about the process of healing. Directed by Lee Jae Gyoo and with popular A-listers such as Park Bo-Young and Yeon Woo-Jin in leading roles, this Netflix original has all the ingredients for success.

35. ‘Vigilante’

Based on a webtoon of the same name, this anti-hero drama to be released on Disney+ follows the adventures of Kim Ji-Yong (played by Nam Joo-Hyuk), a former student of the police academy who loses his mother in an unsolved homicide and takes seeking justice into his own hands, and in the process becomes a fugitive wanted by the authorities. The show’s engaging plot and impressive fight scenes will have fans of action movies hooked.

36. ‘The Worst Evil’

Centred around an investigation into an international drug cartel in the 1980s, this crime drama is perfect for those who enjoy gritty action shows. Featuring a dream cast that includes Ji Chang-Wook, Wi Ha-Joon and Im Se-mi, this show will give audiences a stark look at South Korea’s society in the 1980s.
