Following her Met Gala debut and win at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards, we spotlight the South Korean actress’s most iconic K-dramas to watch

South Korean actress Song Hye-Kyo is no stranger to the K-drama industry. Even before her role as Moon Dong-eun in popular Netflix series The Glory—which won her the Best Actress award at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards—Song has been starring in multiple K-drama series for more than two decades.

Since her breakout role in the 2000 hit drama series Autumn in My Heart the veteran South Korean actor has been widely praised for her acting prowess and charm. Today, with over two decades of experience, Song has acquired multiple awards under her belt and is undoubtedly a household name.

Below, we share some of her most popular K-drama series to binge on.

1. Descendants of the Sun

This 2016 K-drama series sees Song star as Dr Kang Mo-yeon, a surgeon at Haesung Hospital in Seoul. Kang finds herself working in the war-torn area of Urk, where she falls in love with an army captain (played by Song Joong-Ki). The drama quickly gained popularity, further re-establishing Song as a Hallyu superstar

2. Autumn in My Heart

The K-drama star plays Yoon Eun-Suh in this 2000 romantic melodrama. The series sees Yoon’s life gets turned upside down when it’s revealed that she was switched at birth. While previously living a lavish life, Yoon has to return to her birth mother’s household where she faces hardship. Over the years, Song has been praised for her immaculate acting skills while playing Yoon, as well as her portrayal of gloom and suffering. Song’s breakthrough series, Autumn in My Heart pioneered the Korean wave, leading her to become a Hallyu star shortly after its release.

3. All In

Inspired by the life of professional poker player Jimmy Cha, this 2003 action-romance K-drama series follows Kim In-ha (Lee Byung-Hun) and Choi Jung-won (Ji Sung) as they form an unbreakable bond. Song plays Min Soo-Yeon, Kim and Choi’s love interest. Throughout the series, we see Kim and Choi take revenge for Min’s father, who had been killed by loan sharks. Song’s role in this series also won her the Top Excellence Award at the 2003 SBS Drama Awards.

4. Full House

Song plays aspiring scriptwriter Han Ji-eun in this 2004 romance comedy drama. Han gets tricked into believing that she had won a free vacation and while she is away, her friends sell her house to famous actor Lee Young-jae (played by Rain). Throughout the series, we see Han and Lee attempt to live with each other in the same house. The series achieved pan-Asian success, further establishing Song as one of the most well-known South Korean actresses in Asia.  

5. That Winter, the Wind Blows

This 2013 romantic melodrama K-drama series follows con man Oh Soo (Jo In-Sung) who pretends to be the long-lost brother of blind heiress Oh Young (Song Hye-Kyo), hoping to inherit her wealth when she dies. We see the duo grow closer as they learn how to love. This K-drama is a remake of the 2002 Japanese drama Ai Nante Irane Yo. Both Jo and Song were highly praised for their performance in their respective roles.

6. Encounter

In 2021, Song returned to the small screen after a two-year hiatus with the romantic melodrama Encounter. The K-drama sees Song play Cha Soo-hyun, a politician’s daughter. While on a business trip, Cha meets Kim Jin-Hyuk (Park Bo-Gum) and the duo begins spending time together.
