A tale of reincarnation and revenge, Song Joong-ki’s latest drama project stuns audiences with the fantasy and thriller genres

K-drama heartthrob Song Joong-ki is back on our television screens—and we’re not complaining. Reborn Rich has since soared in its rankings among South Korea’s newest drama releases, achieving the status of most-watched drama in its current time slot on South Korea's JTBC cable television network.

Based on the popular web novel The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate by San Kyeong, writer Kim Tae-hee of popular K-drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010) and director Jung Dae-yoon of I’m Not a Robot (2018-2019) transforms the web novel for the small screen with exciting scenes and subtle hints that showcase the stark contrast between the working-class and upper-class in South Korea.

With a star-studded cast and a unique storyline, here are five highlights that make Reborn Rich a must-watch:

1. Cameos from famous stars

With each actor bringing something different to the cast list, there is much to look forward to in the ensemble cast in Reborn Rich.

Certainly, the main cast already features top-notch names in the industry, including Lee Sung-min of The Spy Gone North (2018) and Shin Hyun-bin of Hospital Playlist (2020-2021).

Apart from the main cast, guest appearances are always anticipated. Other notable names making their appearances in the drama are Tiffany Young of top K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation and former B1A4 member and current rapper Baro.

2. The main character defies ageing

Ever thought of returning to your younger self to mend mistakes or regrets? This drama takes reincarnation to a whole new level: a man is reborn into a whole different person. Song plays the role of Yoon Hyun-woo and Jin Do-joon. The former is his true self and the latter, is the grandson of Sunyang Group who had mysteriously disappeared.

Playing a 40-year-old and a 17-year-old proved to be Song’s strength. With his famous boyish good looks, he aptly portrays the two characters and balances the different mindsets that may come from two people from different generations.

3. Actors take inspiration from real life

Director Jung Dae-yoon had mentioned in a press conference that Reborn Rich was unlike the cliché dramas that came before it. Rather, it took inspiration from major events of South Korea’s history which occurred in the 1980s.

That said, actress Park Ji-hyun, who plays Mo Hyun-min, Sunyang Group’s daughter-in-law, trended in South Korean media for her portrayal. Netizens commented on her resemblance to South Korean conglomerate Samsung’s oldest daughter, Lee Boo-jin. Netizens noted that Mo sported Lee’s signature voluminous hairstyle and stern but calm facial expressions.

4. The plot will have you on the edge of your seat

Think revenge, murder, and mystery. Reincarnated into the very family for whom he had worked in his previous life, Song’s character manoeuvres through the cut-throat field of conglomerates.

The now-reincarnated youngest son acts upon his past memories and enacts revenge on the family that had betrayed his former self (a loyal member staff member of 10 years). This unique portrayal of the revenge plot is sure to have you glued to the screen.

5. Part of the drama was filmed in Turkey

The drama has dropped the newest behind-the-scenes footage as it had its first overseas filming in Istanbul, Turkey for the upcoming episodes.

Watch as Song barrels through the streets of Istanbul whilst running from burly men and finding himself in other chaotic situations. Look out for exciting scenes against the beautiful backdrop of the country.
