The Sussexes are back in the news with part one of their much-talked-about documentary on Netflix

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s much anticipated Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, just dropped on Netflix and the duo wasted no time in spilling the tea about their former lives as part of the British royal family. For the uninitiated, the couple’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey back in 2021 marked the beginning of the Sussexes’ tell-all vendetta against the royal family.

This time, the documentary touches on the early days of the couple’s relationship, Markle’s first meeting with royal family members, and her ongoing battle with the British media. Rare and intimate photos of the couple’s children, Archie and Lilibet, were also featured in the documentary.

1. Meghan thought Harry was joking about having to curtsy to the Queen

Harry recalled Meghan’s first meeting with the Queen, revealing that she was the first senior member of his family that Meghan had met. Curtsying to the Queen was out of the picture for Meghan, as she recalled the moment Harry told her of the meeting: “And I remember we were in the car driving up and he's like “You know how to curtsy, right?” And I just thought it was a joke.”

2. Harry said he chose to be with Meghan 'with his heart'

As Harry addressed his budding romance with Meghan when they first met, he shared an anecdote about his father King Charles and his mother, the late Princess Diana. Harry claimed that his marriage was unlike other marriages in his family and mentioned that many men in his family married someone 'who fit in the mould set by the Palace'.

3. Meghan hinted at the awkward experience of meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton for the first time

Dressed in ripped jeans (and barefoot), Meghan remembered going in for a warm hug with future sister-in-law Kate Middleton, but was met with awkwardness. “I was a hugger, always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.” she says. She then continued about the many restrictive etiquette rules followed by the royal family.

4. Harry said Meghan was judged by the royal family for being an actress

The royal family was reportedly impressed by the Suits actress when she first met them, according to Harry. He then mentioned that “some of them didn't quite know what to do with themselves”. He added that only upon realising that Meghan was an American actress did their judgement of her become clouded, thereafter expressing their apprehension and distrust of their relationship.

5. Meghan and Harry began filming themselves in 2020

Harry and Meghan were noted to have begun filming their lives after announcing their decision to step down as senior members of the royal family and wishing for privacy back in 2020. Harry appeared to be filming himself at Heathrow Airport in March 2020 after completing his royal duties. Meghan was also filmed lounging on her bed in Vancouver. Meghan noted that the reason the couple decided to make the documentary was that she felt misrepresented.

6. Harry claimed responsibility for the rift between Meghan and her father

Meghan’s broken relationship with her father, Thomas Markle is familiar to the public. The reason for that rift? Harry. In his words: “I shouldered that because if Meg wasn't with me, then her dad would still be her dad.” In the lead-up to the couple’s wedding in 2018, Thomas was reportedly taking commissions from tabloids for staged photos. He was subsequently absent from his daughter’s wedding.
