Rogue priests, vampires and bloodthirsty zombies: we have it all in this list of horror shows that Singaporeans have loved the most over the years

It’s no secret that we Singaporeans love any opportunity for a good scare. No matter what time of the year it is, horror simply never gets old and it is evident by just how well horror films and television shows do in Singapore, both in theatres and on streaming platforms. 

Considering how much we love terrifying shows, we’ve taken a look at some of the most popular horror films watched by Singaporeans island-wide and put them together for you below. 

From Midnight Mass, an American supernatural horror series focusing on a new priest, to wildly popular shows like as the South Korean zombie film Train To Busan, we have the best of the best ready for your next horror marathon.

1. The Medium

The Medium is a 2021 Thai-South Korean supernatural horror film that follows a team as they travel to Isan, the northeast part of Thailand, to document the daily life of a local medium who has been possessed. Unfortunately, this encounter leads to extremely horrifying encounters when the ancestral spirit transfers to a new host. 

When the film launched on Netflix in Singapore, it immediately shot to the top 10 film rankings both locally and in South Korea.

The documentary-style film was also awarded the Bucheon Choice Award for the best film at the 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and was ranked 15th of all the films released in 2021 in South Korea, with a gross amount of US$7.35 million.

The hair-raising film was also selected as the Thai entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

2. Incantation

As one of the highest-grossing Taiwanese horror films of 2022, Incantation is a must-watch if you are a horror film fanatic.

This Taiwanese supernatural film is shown as found footage and is narrated by a character named Ronan who encourages viewers to memorise an insignia and chant an incantation to send blessings and lift a curse on her six-year-old daughter. 

The story follows Ronan, her boyfriend and his cousin who accidentally breaks a religious taboo while documenting a ritual while filming. The trio then heads to a remote village to visit relatives who practice a type of religious worshipping that can possibly lift the curse. 

This mind-bender is interactive, completely eerie and a must-watch for fans of the genre.

3. Blood Red Sky

In this 2021 British-German action horror film, a woman, Nadja, and her son board a plane to New York where she plans to visit a doctor who can help treat her leukaemia.

As the flight begins to coast, a group of men suddenly murder the air marshals and sabotage the black box. As the group keeps its passengers hostage, Nadja recounts being attacked and bitten by a vampire years ago.

In an attempt to save the passengers, Nadja completes her transformation into a full vampire and begins her attack on the group of criminals.

4. Train to Busan

Train to Busan arguably made Korean horror what it is today after it set a record as the first South Korean film of 2016 to break the audience record of over 10 million theatregoers. The movie later went on to become the highest-grossing Korean film in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. It was also the highest-grossing film of the year in South Korea in 2016.

The film takes place largely on a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan where passengers have to fight to survive when a zombie apocalypse suddenly breaks out in the country.

Starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an, Choi Woo-shik, Ahn So-hee and Kim Eui-sung, this is one movie we could rewatch over and over.

5. All of Us Are Dead

In this South Korean zombie apocalypse series, viewers get thrown into a zombie apocalypse that has broken out in a high school after a failed science experiment. Very quickly, the school is overrun with zombies and the remaining students are forced to survive with no food, water or communication with the outside world. 

The series, which stars Park Ji-hu, Yoon Chan-young and Cho Yi-hyun, was released in January this year and was watched for over 474.26 million hours in its first 30 days on Netflix. 

In June, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season.

6. Midnight Mass

Midnight Mass is an American supernatural horror series that centres on an isolated island community that welcomes a mysterious new priest into their community. Very soon after the charismatic priest’s arrival, a series of bizarre events begin happening in the small town that slowly begins to divide the small community.

The series, which premiered on Netflix in 2021, stars Zach Gilford, Kate Siegel, Hamish Linklater and Samantha Sloyan.
