It’s officially December and dazzling lights are popping across the city, which can only mean one thing—the holiday season is here. Although overseas travel may not be feasible this Christmas, there are plenty of fun events and activities to look forward to in town—think: gift hunting at Christmas markets, indulging in seasonal treats and spending time with your family and friends.

deTour 2021

Where: PMQ, Central

What: deTour, Hong Kong’s biggest design festival returns this December with the theme of “Use(fu)less”. Aiming to reflect how ‘useful’ designs respond to specific needs and explore the invisible values behind all those seemingly ‘useless’ designs, the event will feature mind-blowing creative works and interactive art experiences by local and international designers, expanding visitors' understanding of design.

Tong Chong Street Market Coffee Festival”

When: From now till December 24

Where: G/F, One Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay

What: The ever-popular Tong Chong Street Market is back! The Mills WeWeave Cultural Festival

Hong Kong Ballet: The Nutcracker

Where: Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre

What: No Christmas calendar will be complete without the timeless holiday tradition, Hong Kong Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker, which features majestic staging, beautiful costumes, choreography and storytelling. Competition for the tickets is fierce every year—act quick!

BaseHall Christmas events

When: December 11

Where: BaseHall, 1 Connaught Place, Hong Kong

What: Multi-concept food hall BaseHall is partnering with The Good Sons, a charitable retail concept to launch a European-style festive market to get you in the holiday spirit. Offering plenty of delicious food and drinks, the event features different workshops for guests to enjoy as well—including Christmas wreath-making classes by The Grey Green, leather goods workshops by Motto Carpe Diem, as well as gingerbread decorating with Nest Bakery. That’s not all, the market also welcomes a host of gift stalls selling pre-loved designer wear from Hula and vinyl records from Yeti Out.

At night, the market will be transformed into a fun holiday party jam-packed with festive food, music and games. Six-piece band The Carpio Brothers—who have previously played at Foxglove, the Intercontinental and the Grand Hyatt—will kick off the event performing Christmas classics to set the perfect party mood.

Where: Open-air amphitheatre and public space, Stanley Plaza

What: Gather your friends for a weekend of festive joy and support local businesses at the Stanley Christmas Market. This year, the Stanley Plaza will be transformed into a Wild West-themed adventure land, brimming with over 60 stalls selling unique handmade crafts and holiday treats.

Tai Kwun Circus Plays 2021

Where: Tai Kwun, 10 Hollywood Road, Central, Hong Kong

What: Tai Kwun is bringing back their popular Circus Plays in December, just in time for Christmas and Near Year holidays. This year, the event will feature captivating circus performances and fun family workshops that are fun for all ages.

Highlights of the event programme include Flotados by a famous Spanish troupe, a performance featuring aerial dances; the award-winning solo performance PLI by Czech multidisciplinary artist Viktor Černicky;  circus party, Ting-koo-ki Mad Skills Battle, and more.
