In a quiet corner of the exhibition, the Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate invited observers to witness a romantic tale unfold. Painting with fire
The ballroom scene that serves as the backdrop for these dancing figures reveals another story—one of patience and transformation. The dial features grisaille enamel, a technique with roots in 16th-century French decorative arts.
The process begins in darkness. A black enamel base is fired at temperatures exceeding 800°C, creating a perfect canvas. Artisans then apply ‘blanc de Limoges’ (white enamel) in varying thicknesses. With each application, the dial visits the kiln again, the extreme heat gradually revealing contrasts between light and shadow.

The sun at the center employs the "trembleur" technique—small gold elements mounted on nearly invisible springs that respond to the slightest movement, creating a constant shimmer reminiscent of solar activity. Behind these celestial bodies, lapis lazuli provides the deep blue of space, its natural gold flecks suggesting distant stars.
Hidden craft
The Ruban Mystérieux Watch speaks to a different kind of mystery—the invisible craft of gem-setting. Sapphires and emeralds flow across the piece in an uninterrupted ribbon of color with no visible metal supports.
This illusion relies on a technique where each stone is precision-cut with grooves on its underside. These grooves slide onto gold rails just 0.2mm thick—thinner than a strand of hair. Adjacent stones must match perfectly in color and dimension, requiring meticulous selection and cutting.
