Come up close and personal with Patek Philippe’s most extraordinary time instruments

For a watch connoisseur, the name Patek Philippe, the last independent family-owned Swiss manufacture, is coveted and greatly admired. And if you’re a fan too, this news will come as a real treat: Cortina Watch will be exhibiting four rare Dome Clocks in Kuala Lumpur this month.

Titled “Once Upon a Virtuosity” and running from October 10–23 at Patek Philippe’s Suria KLCC boutique, the exhibition is a showcase of the watchmaker’s unparalleled savoir faire in watchmaking and artisanal craftsmanship, from engraving to gem-setting and enamelling.

This exhibition is also held in celebration of the long and enduring partnership between Patek Philippe and Cortina Watch. Cortina became the official dealer of Patek Philippe in 1978, although Cortina’s founder Anthony Lim has had a friendship with the Stern family since the ’60s.

Over the years, their partnership has only strengthened with the opening of standalone Patek Philippe boutiques across the region from Singapore to Taipei. Cortina currently manages two Patek Philippe boutiques in Kuala Lumpur, one in Suria KLCC and one in JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, which also boasts a Patek Philippe clock on its façade, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

The key highlights of the exhibition are four Patek Philippe Dome Table Clocks acquired by Cortina Watch through the years. Each is a unique creation featuring an array of crafts. Each is also a fine work of art, a precious object meant to be treasured for generations to come.

“The friendship between my grandfather, father and Mr Anthony Lim started over 66 years ago and still stands strong today, much like the relationship between Patek Philippe and Cortina Watch. This is a unique and precious relationship that truly transcends generations.”

First, the Ref. 1677M “Esplanade” created for Singapore’s Golden Jubilee in 2015 that spotlights the unusual architecture of the Esplanade cultural and artistic hub, topped with a rendering of brilliant fireworks. Then there is the Ref. 20094M-001 “Bay of Singapore” that was produced in 2019 to commemorate the large-scale Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition held at Marina Bay Sands Theatre; the clock features Singapore’s famous Merlion as well as its national flower, the orchid.

Taipei got its very own dome clock, the Ref. 20040M-001 “Twilight Taipei”, to celebrate the opening of the first Patek Philippe boutique in the city in 2010. The landscape features the iconic Taipei 101 tower, where the boutique is located.

Last but not least is the Ref. 20145M-001 “Singapore Skyline”, created to commemorate Cortina’s 50th anniversary this year. Inspired by the republic’s Central Business District skyline, familiar landmarks like Marina Bay Sands, the Merlion, and Gardens by the Bay are realised via a highly elaborate and rare technique called cloisonné enamelling. The picturesque scene is depicted in 50 enamel colours, some of which are unique to this clock. On the dome, the fireworks and gold stars are realised using gold and silver dust.
