Historical pieces are not the only attractions at Patek Philippe’s Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore 2019 as the Swiss maison also unveils several special editions for the region, the highlight of which is a striking minute repeater with tourbillon in rose gold

In the spirit of absolute transparency, Patek Philippe has opted for an open architecture for the Ref. 5303 Minute Repeater Tourbillon that exposes the hammers and the gongs on the dial. It is precisely for this reason too that the dial was dispensed with completely, leaving the inner mechanism of the manual R TO 27 PS caliber in full view.

In addition, the gongs are attached directly on the inside of the caseband to maximise sound transmission. The unprecedented exposure allows one to view the full operation of the minute repeater, something every connoisseur wouldn’t be able to resist activating over and over again when the watch is in their hands.

In Plain Sight

Interestingly enough, this is one of the rare times that Patek Philippe has made the tourbillon visible on the dial side. As exposure to UV light may prematurely erode the lubricant, the tourbillons of the Genevan manufacture are usually only seen on the caseback. To resolve the issue of UV exposure, a special protective coating is applied on the sapphire crystal.

Visual Feast

Every part of the movement, no matter how small or inconspicuous, is adorned with some form of decorative design. The rose gold plate features Geneva striping while its recesses are embellished with perlage. The hammers are circularly satin-finished with their edges chamfered and polished. The delicate work of finissage is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.

The exterior is equally sumptuous, an 18k red gold case with latticework on the side of the case and lugs. The hour scale is in red, echoing the colour of the Singapore flag.
