Patek Philippe updates its Aquanaut collection with a stunning haute joaillerie iteration set with diamonds and sapphire
The Aquanaut collection, introduced by Patek Philippe in 1997, is one of the brand’s most recognisable and popular collections to date. Characterised by its distinctive rounded octagonal case and integrated strap, the watch blends sporty elegance with sophisticated design elements in a way that allows it to be worn from day to night, for various occasions. Unsurprisingly, this has made the Aquanaut a favourite among collectors, who appreciate its modern appeal executed with Patek Philippe’s renowned craftsmanship.
In order to cater to more women who desire both style and functionality in their timepieces, the Swiss manufacture launched the Aquanaut Luce in 2004. This collection retained the signature elements of the Aquanaut line but incorporated more feminine touches, such as vibrant colours and refined gem-setting techniques, and came in sizes that were better suited to smaller wrists. Still a popular choice among women as well as men today, the Aquanaut Luce timepieces often feature diamonds and other precious stones, elevating them into the realm of haute joaillerie while maintaining their sporty essence.

Earlier this year at Watches and Wonders Geneva, the largest luxury watch trade show, Patek Philippe added a new Aquanaut Luce timepiece to the beloved collection. The Ref 5268/461G Aquanaut Luce Haute Joaillerie is a showstopper crafted in white gold and covered in dazzling diamonds and rich blue sapphires, showcasing not only Patek Philippe’s technical prowess but also highlighting the intricate art of gem-setting.
Gem-setting requires not only technical skill but also an artistic vision. Each stone must be carefully selected for colour, clarity and cut to ensure a cohesive look that aligns with Patek Philippe’s high standards. The artisans at Patek Philippe undergo extensive training to master these techniques, ensuring that each piece meets the brand’s exacting quality criteria.

The way that Patek Philippe has chosen to set the gems on the Ref 5268/461G Aquanaut Luce Haute Joaillerie does not take away nor distract from the sporty-chic codes of the collection, but embellishes it with a touch of glamour. For starters, the centre of the gold dial is paved with 20 baguette-cut diamonds and 20 blue sapphires to form the Aquanaut collection’s emblematic chequerboard motif. Framing this dial is a chapter ring that alternates between baguette-cut blue sapphire hour-markers and snow‑set brilliant-cut diamonds.
By employing the arts of snow‑ and baguette-setting on the watch, the Aquanaut Luce becomes just as much a precious jewel as it is a sophisticated timepiece. The elaborate snow‑setting technique involves placing smaller stones—in this case, diamonds—closely together without visible metal between them, resulting in a sparkling surface reminiscent of freshly fallen snow. To contrast this soft and organic look of the 160 snow-set diamonds, the 12 blue sapphire hour markers are baguette-set, which entails meticulously arranging the rectangular-cut stones to maximise their visual impact while maintaining sleek lines.

More baguette-cut sapphires can be found on the watch’s rounded octagonal bezel, where they are positioned to form a subtle yet captivating gradation from hues of light to dark blue. Even the lugs are elegantly accentuated by a setting of baguette-cut diamonds, adding a subtle yet luxurious detail.
The dark blue composite strap integrated into the 38.8mm case complements the watch’s overall design while ensuring comfort for the wearer. Beneath its dazzling exterior, the Ref 5268/461G Aquanaut Luce Haute Joaillerie is equipped with the calibre 26-330 S self-winding movement with a stop-seconds function for precise time setting, which can be admired through the sapphire-crystal caseback.
