Brown ceramic looks surprisingly stylish and luxurious on this watch

Unless it’s on a leather strap, brown doesn’t really say premium on a wristwatch—at least that‘s my opinion. Louis Vuitton proves to me otherwise with the new Tambour Ceramic, a standout addition to the model's latest collection of high-end offerings. It is the first Tambour in ceramic.

Ceramic is featured from case to crown to bracelet, rendered in rarely seen—if ever—brown. Recalling the iconic hue of Louis Vuitton trunks, brown has actually been a signature colour on the Tambour dial since its debut in 2002. Now that the chocolate hue has spread beyond that, Louis Vuitton pairs it with the understated sheen of rose gold, an astute decision that gives the Tambour Ceramic a distinguished and refined elegance.

Achieving the right shade of brown is a meticulous process and it involves firing the blocks at high temperatures, and at the same time, having careful control of shrinkage. The case and bracelet are alternately polished, brushed, and micro-blasted, all executed immaculately by hand.

The stepped dial is given a galvanic treatment followed by applying several layers of lacquer to get the desired brown to match the case. The central part of the dial features vertical brushing, the hour disc is sandblasted, and the small seconds subdial is snailed The monochromatic appearance is contrasted by 18-karat rose gold hands, hour markers, and numerals, coated with blue Super-Luminova for optimal legibility.
