The German watchmaker expands its beloved Lange 1 collection with models in new dial colours
When A Lange & Söhne debuted the Lange 1 in 1994, it marked a bold new direction for the brand and over the years, it has become a hallmark of modern precision watchmaking. Since the beginning, the Lange 1 series has stood out for its asymmetrical dial layout, a feature that sets it apart from traditional watch designs. The hours‑and‑minutes subdial is positioned on the left side of the dial, horizontally centralised to an outsize date window and a seconds subdial that sit, respectively, near the top and bottom of the face on the right side, with the power reserve indicator spanning the arc between the two. This unique arrangement adheres to the principles of the golden ratio, ensuring a harmonious balance that remains visually appealing even after three decades.

Alongside the innovative and groundbreaking off‑centre dial configuration and the distinctive outsize date display, the Lange 1 incorporates traditional Saxon elements such as a three‑quarter plate, screwed gold chatons and a screw balance. Certainly, this unique blend of modernity and heritage has etched the Lange 1 into the annals of watchmaking history.
“The Lange 1 is a timepiece that unites everything that distinguishes a refined mechanical watch—originality, timeless elegance and horological precision—down to the last detail,” says A Lange & Söhne CEO Wilhelm Schmid. “When it was launched 30 years ago, it broke the existing design rules and defined its very own style. This innovative force is embodied [in] our ambition to never stand still.”
In proud celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Lange 1 this year, A Lange & Söhne launches four limited‑edition timepieces that uphold the collection’s legacy while introducing fresh aesthetic elements. The novelties comprise two new versions of the Lange 1, each limited to just 300 pieces, and two variations of the Little Lange 1, of which there are only 150 pieces each.

The two new Lange 1 offerings feature refreshed faces: a striking black onyx dial—a first for the Lange 1 series—housed in a 38.5 mm 950 platinum case, and a vibrant blue one crafted from 925 silver that sits within a 38.5 mm case in 750 pink gold. Both versions retain the Lange 1’s signature asymmetrical dial layout, Roman numerals and prominent outsize date display, with the deep lustre of the onyx dial, whose jet-black surface reflects light in captivating ways, adding a unique depth and richness to the luxurious timepiece. The blue dial, meanwhile, pairs and contrasts beautifully with the warm tone of its case, radiating both elegance and modernity. These new timepieces each comes with a hand‑stitched alligator leather strap in a hue that matches its dial.
Mirroring these offerings are the new Little Lange 1 models, which come in 950 platinum with a black onyx dial, and 750 pink gold with a blue dial. But as its name suggests, the Little Lange 1 features a more compact case size of 36.8 mm, appealing to those who prefer a more delicate wrist presence while maintaining the same design ethos as its larger counterpart.

At the heart of these four limited‑edition timepieces is the L121.1 manufacture calibre, which was introduced in 2015 and meticulously crafted to meet A Lange & Söhne’s rigorous quality standards. This manually wound movement exemplifies the watchmaker’s commitment to precision, ensuring that the outsize date instantaneously advances by one day at midnight. It operates at 21,600 semi‑oscillations per hour for accurate timekeeping and assures a robust 72‑hour power reserve, thanks to its twin mainspring barrels. The movement’s hand‑engraved components can be admired through the watches’ transparent sapphire‑crystal casebacks, showcasing untreated German silver plates adorned with Glashütte ribbing.
“Thirty years ago, A Lange & Söhne succeeded in designing a mechanical work of art with the Lange 1 that established new benchmarks in precision watchmaking,” says Anthony de Haas, the brand’s director of product development. “Developed out of the passion to do things differently, it has since been a symbol of our manufacture’s self‑conception to craft timepieces that combine superb functionality with aesthetic appeal.”
